A luncheon party in honour of Mr Vithaldas J. Mamtora was held in Manchester to celebrate his 100th birthday….reports Mr Niarnjan Bhatt

Mr Vithaldas Mamtora who resides in Heald Green, Cheadle, Cheshire was accompanied by his wife. His immediate and extended family, a number of friends from Malawi who have settled in Manchester together with friends and the committee members of the Indian Senior Citizens Centre of which he is a founder Member.
Born in 1916 in the small village of Jasapur in Gujarat, Mr Mamtora left India in 1933 to take up employment as a shop assistant in the Central African state of Nyasaland (now Malawi).

After his marriage in India in 1944, he returned to Malawi and over the subsequent years raised a family of four. Setting up his own business brought prosperity and a happy rewarding life culminating after a period of nearly 40 years in Africa a desire to retire in the UK where his sons had settled . Mr Mamtora became an active member of the Indian Association based at the Gandhi Hall in Didsbury, Manchester.
It is here that the idea of setting up a Centre for Indian Senior Citizen Centre developed and in association with the late Dr B. C. Das became a founder member. The Centre is now a very active successful organization with over 400 members and his contribution has been recognized by the award of an MBE and Award of Mercy in 2010.
Mr Vithaldas Mamtora has dedicated his last 20 years to the Indian Senior Citizens Centre in Manchester and currently presides over the functions of the Centre.
In recognition of his long-standing contribution and dedication, the Senior Citzens presented a specially engraved plaque, emphasizing Mr Mamtora’s motto “Service to mankind is service to God”.
