The newly elected Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has confirmed he will champion London’s film and screen industries around the world, to ensure international production continues to come to the capital.With the film industry attracting more than £1billion of international production spend for two consecutive years for the first time since records began, the Mayor said that he recognised the sector’s importance and wanted to grow both the cultural and economic value delivered by film, TV, video games, VFX and animation.
New figures from Film London, the UK capital’s screen industries agency, reveal that its activities in 2015 generated £649m for the whole UK economy and that for every £1 of public money invested in the agency it generated £250. With upcoming London-centric productions like Doctor Strange, Bridget Jones’s Baby, Assassin’s Creed, The Crown,Justice League and Wonder Woman wrapped or in production, the capital’s place at the heart of the global film and television industries remains strong, and Film London welcomed the new Mayor’s backing which will help its work go from strength to strength.
Sadiq Khan said: “London’s screen industries are a global success story. They generate billions for the UK economy and create thousands of jobs, reinforcing London’s pre-eminent status as an international hub for both creativity and business. I look forward to working with Film London to ensure our city continues to attract significant inward investment for this hugely important sector.”
Film London announced the new figures at the Cannes Film Festival, where it is championing the UK capital’s tremendous offer for the global production industries, from the film-friendliness of the city itself to its world-class VFX companies to opportunities for financiers, agents and distributors.
