Sinhala and Tamil New Year (Bak Maha Ulela) was celebrated recently in London by Janahanda Foundation. Hundreds of Sri Lankan community members have attended the eight-hour long event organised at Feltham marked by interesting folklore games and cultural programmes….reports Ragasudha Vinjamuri

After the traditional lightning of inaugural oil lamp by the invited guests, patron of the organisation Surya Samaraweera has rendered the welcome speech. The most venerable Bogoda Seelawimala Nayake Thero of London Buddhist Vihara gave an Anusasana representing Buddhist community.  Cultural programme included performances by the students of Neetha Rohini Dance Academy. Indian dance Lavani and Irish dance were also presented on the occasion. The show was compered by Gayan and Sulochana. This was followed by music until late evening.

Distinguished guests included Seema Malhothra, MP for Feltham and Hounslow, Lord Sardar Singh, Sugeeswara Gunarathna, Acting High Commissioner of Sri Lanka, Cllr. Mukesh Malhotra, Deputy Mayor of Hounslow, Cllr. Jagdish Sharma, Cllr. Bishnu Bahadur Gurung and Akhil Bishwas, among others. Brother Charles Anthony has spoken on the occasion.  This is the thirteenth year that Janahanda Foundation is hosting the New Year to promote Sri Lankan cultural values among the expatriates living in the London Borough of Hounslow and the surrounding areas.
