Don’t We Deserve Better Than Boris?

The race to become the next prime minister via Tory leader chair has begun. Seven are in the fray now. What’s the credibility of this bunch to become the next leader and the prime minister of this country? Don’t we deserve more? Are we being served properly? What leadership qualities have they displayed and what do they offer the British public to address their day-to-day problems? Are they serious about the future of this country and its voters? Or are they putting their personal interest ahead of a national agenda?….writes Anasudhin Azeez

UNITED NATIONS, July 22, 2016 (Xinhua) -- British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson speaks to the press at the United Nations headquarters in New York, July 22, 2016. British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, promising "there's a deal to be done" on balancing freedom of movement and trade with members of the European Union, said here Friday the United Kingdom (UK) was going to "be more visible, more active more energetic that ever before" on the international stage. The race has begun. Seven are in the fray now to become the next Tory leader. Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, Jeremy Hunt, Dominic Raab, Sajid Javid, Matt Hancock and Rory Stewart are running to become the next leader of the Conservative Party. Mark Harper, Esther McVey and Andrea Leadsom were eliminated from the first round.

Prominent British-Asian Conservatives like Priti Patel and Alok Sharma are in the Boris camp while Dr Rami Ranger, Chairman of Conservative Friends of India (CFI) is supporting Home Secretary Sajid Javid.

What’s the credibility of this bunch to become the next leader and the prime minister of this country? Don’t we deserve more? Are we being served properly? What leadership qualities have they displayed and what do they offer the British public to address their day-to-day problems? Are they serious about the future of this country and its voters? Or are they putting their personal interest ahead of a national agenda?

When checking their track records you can see that they are a team of minions when compared to 20th Century giants like Winston Churchill and Clement Attlee. Churchill, the hero of Boris, fuelled the spirit of the nation to win the war. Attlee served under Churchill during the war when the country was in need of unity. But look at the current leaders. The Labour leader is still confused with his stand on Brexit. In or Out? No idea! Business forums like the CBI are warning about a disastrous no-deal post Brexit scenario. People like Lord Swaraj Paul and others are pleading with the politicians to drop the gun! Nobody will shoot in their head to win an argument! But who cares? The economy wizard Esther McVey has got the abilities to push the broken ship to the shore of prosperity. But in reality, you will destroy whatever you acquired. The finest example is the automobile sector.

Ambitious ministerial berth seekers like Priti are counting on the front runner Boris’s camp. But please check Boris’ credentials before voting for him. An ideal book to catch up with his story is Andrew Gimson’s Boris – The Rise of Boris Johnson. The book is still available on eBay for less than £3. Who is the man behind the mask of a clown? His childhood, his education, editorship of the Spectator, expulsion from the front bench by then leader Michael Howard, his insult and later apology to Liverpudlians, his two-term “good governance” as mayor of London …read it. Then you will realise. All are riddled with classic gaffes, lack of discipline in personal and professional life, besides breaking the code of conduct. When you are in office, you have to follow a decorum. Otherwise, you are a misfit. How can you be a leader when your conduct is unbecoming of the common rules, and sabotaging national interest?

Boris is full of contradictions. He praised David Cameron for combining Conservatism with Compassion. On many occasions, he said Cameron is the right man for the job as prime minister but turned against him when Cameron anointed George Osborne as his successor. Cameron was in a hurry to fix the ever-daunting European issue of the party. The overconfident prime minister with his clear majority in the Parliament under-estimated the wrath of the electorate who were feeling the heat of austerity. He trusted the Labour and he was confident to win the support of colleagues like Johnson and Priti. The rest is history!

Boris grabbed the opportunity of the EU referendum to snub his old friend and fulfill personal agenda with the support of like-minded folks, wounded and demoted Michael Gove and Priti Patel. Boris is now avoiding the media. He did the same during the last few hours of that crucial referendum announcement. He was sitting on the fence and Cameron was trying to contact Boris. Mr Johnson was not available!

Boris’s credentials match with that of a racist. He compared niqab-wearing Muslim women to Letterboxes, he called Africans as “flag-waving piccaninnies” with “watermelon smiles.” The so-called half-Turkish Etonian ridiculed the pain of Liverpudlians, lied to his Leader, cheated his wife, backstabbed his friend…What else do you want to label him as an unreliable character?

Boris’ elevation to the Tory leadership and the No Deal Brexit will decimate the country. The Scottish Nationalist Party will revive their plebiscite call and there is a chance that they will clinch a majority this time. Nationalism is not a one-way traffic and it is applicable to all. When we are reduced to becoming an island nation, other parts of the Union will emulate the example set by the big brother.

The charismatic Scottish leader Ruth Davidson is aware of this fact and that is why she is supporting neutral Sajid in the race. According to Nicola Sturgeon, Boris is a ‘complete and utter charlatan’ and the prospect of him becoming prime minister will “horrify” people across Scotland. She told the BBC that if Boris is successful in his leadership bid, it could encourage more people to back Scotland becoming an independent country.

by . “I think it would lead to many more people thinking that the best future for Scotland is to be independent so that we can protect our interests, that we can take our own decisions, that we can co-operate with other independent countries across the European Union for our mutual interest,” she said.

“In other words, be a normal, progressive independent country. Boris Johnson, the guy who misled people in the Brexit vote, the guy who has only ever put his own interests first as far as I can see — a complete and utter charlatan in my opinion. Even the Scottish Tories here are terrified at the prospect because I think they know what it would do to their standing.”

Remember Colonel Nathan R. Jessup’s famous quote in A Few Good Men. The Jack Nicholson-character tells the naval attorney played by Tom Cruise that ‘you can’t handle the truth’. The same quote is relevant here for Boris because he can’t even handle the facts properly. A poor mom is languishing in an Iranian jail because of his careless utterances in Parliament and later at a select committee hearing.

Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe, a 38-year-old project manager with the Thomson Reuters Foundation, has been in prison since her arrest in Tehran on April 3, 2016. The charity worker was accused of plotting to topple the Iranian regime, which she denies, and later sentenced to five years in prison. How many more will pay the price for this self-centered egoist’s lifelong ambition to reach No 10?

Boris is getting good support from Priti Patel, who refused to acknowledge the rise in the attack on immigrants in the country just after the EU referendum.

The next best man in the list is Boris’ friend turned foe Michael Gove. The political psychopath who sabotaged his mate’s prime ministerial bid in 2015. Gove was a journalist who always preached Conservative values. Daily Mail, the paper where his wife is working as a columnist, called him a hypocrite. That summarises everything. He snorted cocaine, not one time – but many times. Not in those lazy, carefree college days – but in a career as a journalist, a profession we all admire. The profession of CP Scott, Harold Evans etc. When you are on the payroll of a news organisation, you have to think twice to even gulp a glass of wine. We don’t know what time the call will come from the newsroom. The profession demands your life in return to fulfil its missionary values. Snorting cocaine exposes the hollowness of a journalist’s commitment to his profession. How can you preach, if you are not practicing those principles?

by . Are we safe in the hands of Jeremy Hunt? The man known for destroying the NHS now wants to destroy the country. Like Mr Johnson, Hunt is prone to gaffes. He is even confused with the country of origin of his wife. Is she Chinese or Japanese?
“My wife is Japanese – my wife is Chinese,” Mr Hunt told his Chinese counterpart!

Can you trust Hunt? According to Dr Kailash Chand, the senior-most GP from the Asian community and former vice chair of British Medical Association, Mr Hunt is a disaster.

“Jeremy Hunt is the longest-serving Health Secretary of this country but he’ll be remembered as the worst, Dr Chand said.

Hunt was appointed to detoxify his predecessor Andrew Lansley‘s reforms and keep the NHS out of negative publicity. Lansley will be remembered for the Health and Social Care Act (2012) which has been considered by many to have been the principle cause of fragmentation, privatisation and effectively the architecture for dismantling the NHS.

Hunt has in fact outdone his predecessor in handling the NHS. His confrontational style has alienated not just his colleagues but also many healthcare workers. Under his watch, trolley waits in A&E are almost five times higher than in 2010, and timely access to primary care has become difficult if not impossible in many areas.

Remember the junior doctors’ strike. They were just demanding decent pay and Hunt refused. NHS’s loss was Middle East’s gain. Most of them flocked to Qatar and Dubai and now we are struggling to fill the rota at A& E and the wards.

President Trump wants to put NHS on the negotiating table for the post-Brexit trade deal. The idea of privatising the NHS is not new because all the Tories want to dismantle the NHS. According to Dr Chand, the only ‘progress’ Hunt has made in his tenure is to turn the NHS to NHS plc, increasingly drawing on public funds to line the pockets of wealthy venture capitalists or multinationals. The way the NHS was managed by Hunt is a stunning example of how not to do things. Money that could be spent on patient care was spent on unnecessary bureaucracy, debt interest and dividends. Meanwhile, Hunt blamed individual cash-strapped trusts for making “bad choices”.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid with Dr Rami Ranger

Sajid Javid – the most beneficial of meritocracy in the Tory party. An Asian boy who embraced Conservatism during his campus days. But what’s his credentials? When was the last time this elite Tory mingled with his own people? He was not visible in any of the campaigns. Mr Javid, a beneficiary of free education, was silent when the coalition introduced tuition fees. He was silent when the coalition wielded the axe on social benefits and imposing controversial austerity measures.
Now forget about austerity and spend more on schools and colleges! Etonians follow a lifestyle pattern in which they were insulated to the day to day struggle of commoners. They don’t know the struggle to pay the electricity bill and weekly shopping. But Sajid…The Rochdale-born son of a Pakistani migrant is not considering the struggles of common-men. How can he be a supporter of Osborne and Cameron and follow their ideals blindly? Instead of going to Bristol to shoot his campaign video, he should visit Rochdale and spend some time near the tiller at the Shell petrol pump on Manchester Road, not far from Milkstone Road, where he spent his childhood. You will see the struggle of the common folks to recharge their pre-paid electricity meters. This is 21st century Britain! You are talking about 5G and here the people are still on pre-paid meter and they don’t even have enough money to pay the bills.

There is no solution for the common issues affecting the majority electorate. Boris is offering tax rebate for high income earners! Gove is targeting VAT and Sajid is promising to pump billions! There is no hope from this motley crowd of power seekers. There is no genuine appeal or passion to solve the problems of the common man.

The British electorate is not worried about the huge benefits of making billion dollar trade deals with India or South Korea, but the resources to keep their local library open or the staff at GP services. The ilks of Jacob Rees Mogg and Johnson can afford private health care and luxury holidays, but the commoners should rely on their local GP services and EasyJet flights to Madrid. We need a strong and prosperous Great Britain and not a broken little cold and isolated island. Viva Britain. Viva Democracy!
