Besides Rishi Sunak, the chancellor, another beneficiary of Boris Johnson’s big reshuffle is Reading West MP Alok Sharma. The international development secretary is now promoted to handle two crucial posts.
Indian-origin politician Mr Sharma will be business secretary and minister in charge of the COP26 climate summit.
The Downing Street press office has confirmed that Mr Sharma will be president of the event. Claire O’Neill had been put in charge of this year’s international climate change conference in Glasgow. She had been an energy minister under Theresa May but is no longer an MP. But last week she was removed from the post, with No 10 saying it wanted a minister in charge of the conference, known as COP26.
Mr Sharma trained as an accountant and worked in banking before entering politics 10 years ago as MP for Reading West.
In a speech last month, at a UK-Africa investment summit, he spoke of the “undeniable implications” of climate change.
“The huge burden of climate change will not be shared equally or fairly across the world.
“Many developing countries are already bearing the brunt of its impact,” he said.
