The renovated Sweet Meat Street at Kozhikode will be reopened by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

The District administration is all set for the inaugural ceremony of the renovated SM Street (Mittai Theruvu) in the presence of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, just in time for the Christmas-New Year celebration. Inauguration ceremony will be at 7 p.m. in the presence of Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran and Excise Minister T.P. Ramakrishnan. Writers M.T. Vasudevan Nair, U.A. Khader and historian M.G.S. Narayanan will be honoured on the occasion.

Rs 6.26 crore has been spent for the renovation of the street. The Collector said that the renovation idea for the street was put forward by the merchants some 30 years back due to the constant fire mishaps there.

Now as a security measure, 9 fire hydrant valves have been installed in various parts of the street.  The drainage facility was renovated, new washrooms and toilet facilities, streetlights, seating facilities and music system were added.  Lengthy walls were decorated with various reliefs that speak about the specialty of Kozhikode, and these are only some of the beautification works.

“Every corner of the street will have one or the other cultural activity going on. Kudumbasree members will build a human wall on both sides of the street,” the Collector said.

The famous Malayalam writer and Jnanpith Award winner S.K Pottekkatt’s ‘Oru Theruvinte Kadha’ (The Story of a Street) is based on the Sweet Meat Street at Kozhikode. It sketches a host of characters who spend their lives making a living in ‘The Street’.

District Collector U.V Jose, Dr. M.K Muneer MLA, A. Predeep Kumar MLA, DTPC Secretary Binoy, will be among prominent personalities to be part of the inaugural ceremony.
