US president to open high-level meeting at UN on refugees….reports Asian Lite News
The US President Barack Obama will open a high-level meeting on refugees in September 2016 at the United Nations, when world leaders will be here to attend the annual debate of the UN General Assembly.
Samantha Power, the US UN ambassador who holds the rotating council presidency for December, made the statement here on Monday as a massive influx of refugees were reported in Africa, the Middle East and Europe over the past months.
The US plan needs to be coordinated with the UN, which does not make response to it at the press time, Xinhua reported.
The US is one of the five permanent members of the 15-nation Security Council, the other four veto-wielding members are Britain, China, France and Russia.
Another report from Ankara says 18 refugees drowned and 14 others were rescued as their boat capsized off Turkey’s Aegean coast, the media reported on Saturday.
The boat carried Syrian, Pakistani and Iraqi refugees, Xinhua cited the report as saying.
Turkish coast guards on Friday sent 14 refugees to hospitals in Bodrum, said the report.
Some 80,000 refugees were rescued off Turkish coasts this year alone, while more than 3,000 died on their way to Greek islands via Turkey, the Turkish coast guard said.
Over 600,000 refugees have reportedly reached Greek islands so far this year, in a crisis that has alarmed the European Union.
