MP Veerendra Kumar MP

Writer, former Union minister and Managing Director of Malayalam daily newspaper Mathrubhumi MP Veerendra Kumar MP (84) passed away on Thursday. He breathed his last at a private hospital in Kozhikode after suffering a cardiac arrest.

He was admitted to the hospital on Thursday. The last rites will be held on Friday in Wayanad.

He was born in in Kalpetta, Wayanad on July 22, 1936 to the Socialist Party leader and Madras legislator Padmaprabha Gowdar and Marudeevi Avva.

He held a Masters Degree in Philosophy from Madirashi Vivekananda College and an MBA from the University of Cincinnati, USA.

He was also a member of Executive Committee of Indian Newspaper Society, Director of PTI, Trustee of Press Trust of India, Member of International Press Institute, Member of Commonwealth Press Union, Member of World Association of Newspapers Executive Committee and State Committee President of Janata Dal (U).

He also held the post of Union Minister of State for Finance in the Union Cabinet and later the Union Minister of State for Labor with independent charge.

Being a writer, he has won several awards and accolades. C. Achutha Menon literary award, Odakkuzhal award, Swadeshabhimani award, Murthy Devi award are few of those.
