A petition has been launched to encourage BBC and other media outlets and the British government to officially call the terrorist group, the so called “Islamic State,” as “Daesh”…reports Asian Lite News
Rehman Chishti MP, who has been leading the campaign to change the phase used, has already sent letters to the BBC and to the Government signed by more than 120 MPs urging them to use “Daesh”. The campaign has now gained the support of over 140 MPs. He is now asking everyone to sign the petition to put pressure on them to make this change.
The petition, can be found on the Change.org website – http://chn.ge/1KVaatz
Last week, the BBC signalled that it was unwilling to drop the term “Islamic State”. In his reply to Rehman Chishti, the Director General, Lord Hall, said that they needed to “preserve the BBC’s impartiality,” so could not use the word “Daesh”. Many found the BBC’s logic and thinking to be bizarre.
Whereas Prime Minister David Cameron told Parliament that he is “happy for people to use Daesh” but said that he believes ISIL is an alternative.
The two letters, authored by Rehman Chishti, has been signed by high profile figures including the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson MP, the former First Minister of Scotland, Alex Salmond MP, and the Chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee, Keith Vaz MP.
Many countries around the World, including France and Turkey, have already adopted the phrase “Daesh”. The word ‘Daesh’, which is an Arabic name for the group, holds negative connotations, referring to “one who sows discord”.
Member of Parliament for Gillingham and Rainham, Rehman Chishti MP said: “This barbaric terrorist group is not Islamic nor is it a state and Daesh is a better term for it. By signing this petition we can show the strength of feeling in our country to make this change and convince the Government and media outlets to officially use the phrase.
“Daesh is officially used by France and Turkey and many countries around the World, is acceptable to many peace loving Muslims and will assist us in defeating their terrorist propaganda campaign.”
