Leicester City Council is hoping to introduce the service for anyone who wants to get online in the city centre, and is inviting companies to submit tenders for the work.

If successful, a free wifi zone could be established in the central part of the city, in an area including Clock Tower, Abbey Park, Leicester University and Leicester Royal Infirmary.

The idea is to promote wider digital access and help people to find out more about Leicester.

City mayor Peter Soulsby said: “We already have free wifi in our libraries and we know how popular wifi hotspots in city centre coffee shops and other venues are. We’d like to be able to extend this offer so that people can get online even more easily.

“Free wifi could also help promote economic growth in the city.

“The successful provider would not be allowed to keep any data on users who access the wifi, and the project would not cost the council anything.

“The successful bidder would be able to use our street furniture to provide the service, so they wouldn’t need to install any extra infrastructure of their own. They’d benefit from the publicity of providing this free service for us.”

Visitors to the city centre can already use their smartphones to scan QR codes on information boards around the city. The codes link to web pages which give more information on Leicester’s history and heritage.

There is also an interactive heritage app available at Leicester Castle.

The wifi could have a projected speed of around 7mbs per second – enough to makes apps and online information easy to download.

Once a tender is decided upon and a company appointed, it is expected that the wifi service would go live at the beginning of March next year.
