The East Ham community celebrated Pongal in its colourful best on Friday. Councillor Mr Sathianesan added that Pongal which is the Tamil New Year will be observed as the International Tamil Day, and from now on the entire Tamil community would be known as European Tamils, thus forming a new identity for the next generation to carry on.
The local MP Stephen Timms cut a birthday cake to commemorate the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabet II, thus making the East Ham Tamils the first people to celebrate the occasion. Mr Sathianesan said that the new red and blue Pongal lights would adorn the streets of Newham for the next nine days.
