KannadigaruUK, one of the biggest organisations for Kannada community in the UK, celebrated its 13th Kannada Rajyotsava under the title “Kannada Habba 2017” at Wembly, London with great splendour and fervour. The organisation which was founded for the promotion of Kannada language and culture in the UK started its activities by celebrating its first Kannada Rajyothsava in 2005. Since then it has been hosting many events including its flagship event Kannada Rajyothsava every year.
Nearly 800 Kannada speaking UK residents braved the freezing cold weather to participate in the event. “Breakfast with Celebrities” was the starting programme of the day where audience had South Indian hot breakfast with artists and the chief guest. Many popular dignitaries such as Mr. Nagathihalli Chandrashekar, a renowned Kannada film director, producer and screenwriter, Mr Bharatesh, a retired Karnataka High court Chief Justice, Mr. Balaji, the first secretary at Indian Consulate, Dr Nandakumar, the executive director at Bharatiya Vidyabhavan, Mr Suresh Gattapur, the Swindon Councillor graced the occasion as chief guests of the event. KannadigaruUK felicitated Mr Nagathihalli Chandrashekar by awarding him KannadigaruUK’s coveted “Kannada Ratna” for the current year.
KannadigaruUK conducts Kannada Kali (learn Kannada language) classes at 6 centres across the country where the next generation kids are taught their mother tongue in a systematic way. Kids from all the 6 centres showcased their talent on the day and left all the audience spell bound with their jaw-dropping performances. Kids were very proud to be part of the Kannada Kali classes and perform on this big event. Each Kid was awarded with Kannada Kali certificate from Kannada Abhivruddhi Pradikara, a government of Karnatak authority, along with performance certificates as well. Teachers were awarded mementos as a token of gratitude from KannadigaruUK for their voluntary, community service and the training they imparted on kids to present their talents.
The main attraction of the day was performances from the Kannada artists hailing from Karnataka, India. While Mr Go.Na. Swamy entertained the crowd with his folk music singing, Ms Dish Ramesh (daughter of Mr Mandya Ramesh) a theatre artist swept the audience off their feet with her high pitched theatre song (Ranga Geethe) . The audience were mesmerised by her power packed singing by Ms Disha Ramesh demanding her to sing more. The stand up comedian Mr Mahadeva Sattigeri entertained with his crispy humour. The theatre artist, Kannada film actor and Maja Talkies star Mr Mandya Ramesh along with another Maja Talkies star Mr.Naveen Padeel was next to enthral the audience with their comedy act. All artists were felicitated by the organising committee after their acts.
There were also some amazing performances such as dances, Yakshagana and singing from the local talents which added more variety to the programme list.
Delicious Indian lunch and evening snacks were served to the attendees during the event. Ogaara Foods were the title sponsor of the event. It was a full day Kannada cultural programme with food with an opportunity to meet and see the Kannada artists perform. The audience were full of appreciation and felt it was one of the best programmes KannadigaruUK hosted since it started.
