Jo Cox, 41, Labour MP for Batley and Spen, was murdered near her surgery on Thursday,
The popular MP was left bleeding on the floor by her attacker. BBC reported. After fighting for life in the hospital, the MP’s death was confirmed at police headquarters in Wakefield in the evening.
The attack came on the steps of the town library just before 1pm, where the 41-year-old mother-of-two had been holding a surgery with her constituents. Cox, who was elected to the Commons last year as MP for Batley and Spen, was rushed to Leeds Infirmary hospital by air ambulance after apparently being shot twice and stabbed.
A 52-year-old man , locally named as Tommy Mair was arrested near Market Street, Birstall, West Yorkshire. The police said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the attack.
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the country would be “in shock at the horrific murder”, describing the MP as a “much loved colleague”. David Cameron also tweeted to express his concern. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Jo and her family,” he wrote.
It has been announced that the Vote Leave and Remain have suspended campaigning in the EU referendum in light of the attack.
