Mancunians celebrate Bengali New Year

Sree Durga Mandir Trust Manchester celebrated the Indian Rama Nawami festival and the Bengali New Year ‘’ Nabo Barsho Baron 1426’’ at the Jain Samaj Mandir Hall in Stockport with pomp, fanfare and gaiety.

The entire day was celebrated with traditional offerings with pujas, aartis, pushpanjali and cultural activities. Shree Shyam Narayan Chakraborty was the priest on the occasion who ensured that traditional festivity was retained with all its splendour.

Traditional Rabindranath Tagore songs celebrating the new year and cultural performances with traditional dances marked the day’s festivity. Cultural event Coordinators Sharmishta Roy and Masumi Datta managed to mobilise young and old to enthral those gathered.

Decked in traditional yellow saris – colour that associates with Spring – known as Basant, women stole the show with their dances. Interestingly non- Bengalis tabla expert Sandeep Popatkar and keyboard specialist Mukesh Kanan both gave the event a cohesive community feel.

Delicious ‘’prasad’’ Food that attracts young and old was served with smile to all gathered.

Smt Saraswati Sinha leader of the senior citizens community in Manchester and Trustee of the Sree Durga Mandir Trust, and office bearers Kishore Mukherjee and Kaushik Chakraborty ensure that the guests were looked after well.  Yupp TV sponsored the event.
