American tennis great Serena Williams won her sixth Wimbledon women’s singles title with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Spain’s Garbine Muguruza here.
The 33-year-old survived an early scare in the first set from the 20th seed after she was broken in the opening game. She broke back in the eighth game to pull it even at 4-4. The World No.1 held her serve and broke again to win the first set, reports Xinhua.
The American then took control of the second set to go ahead 5-1 on Centre Court of the All England Club. But Muguruza, playing her first Grand Slam final, made a strong comeback, breaking Williams twice to make it 5-4.
Muguruza, who upset Williams in last year’s French Open second round, dropped her serve finally and saw her opponent win her fourth consecutive Grand Slam tournament and 21st in total.
