UK-based philanthropist Charan Kanwal Sekhon has come up with a unique education support programme to help students in North India. Sekhon is the founder and Chairman of a new charity called SEVA (Social Education Voluntary Association) Trust UK.

The Trust was launched recently at the UK Parliament during an Indo-UK education workshop attended by the Acting High Commission of India Dinesh Patnaik, British Deputy High Commissioner to India Mr David Lelliott, Haryana Education Minster Ram Bilas Sharma besides many British MPs and over 100 leading academics, researches and education experts.

In addition to providing direct financial support for students from rural and disadvantaged backgrounds in Punjab & Haryana, SEVA Trust UK will coordinate a large mentorship program to help students with further studies in India and abroad and to guide them in securing employment opportunities.

SEVA Trust UK launched the first project from rural village Burundi in Punjab. Sekhon said ‘There are a number of NGOs working in Punjab providing financial support to students but we need to provide our students continued support until they secure an employment in their desired fields. Once SEVA Trust adopts a student, we will allocate an expert mentor who will guide that student throughout their studies. We are overwhelmed by the level of support from top UK & India based educational institutions and from very experienced Academics and top Researches who have joined SEVA Trust Team. SEVA Trust will also work closely with the British High Commission in India and Indian authorities on raising awareness on Health and Environmental issues.’’
