US to allow new injection method for monkeypox jabs

The government had last week declared monkeypox a public health emergency, more than a week after the World Health Organisation qualified the outbreak as a global emergency….reports Asian Lite news

The United States government is planning to stretch out its limited supply of monkeypox vaccine by allowing a different method of injection that uses one-fifth as much per shot, the New York Times reported, citing senior officials.

For Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to authorise the intradermal injection, which requires injecting one-fifth of the current dose into the skin instead of a full dose into underlying fat, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will need to issue a new emergency declaration, the report said, allowing regulators to invoke the FDA’s emergency use powers, it was reported by Reuters.

Meanwhile, NYT reported that the announcement is expected as early as Tuesday afternoon.

The government had last week declared monkeypox a public health emergency, more than a week after the World Health Organisation qualified the outbreak as a global emergency.

Meanwhile, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates showed that nearly 1.7 million men who have sex with men face the biggest threat from monkeypox in the US.

According to CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, gay and bisexual men who are HIV positive face the greatest health risk from monkeypox, CNBC reported.

Men taking medicines, called PREP, to reduce their chance of contracting HIV also face the risk.

“That’s the population we have been most focused on in terms of vaccination,” Walensky said.
