Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he will release his tax returns “shortly” as he battles to recover from having to sack Nadhim Zahawi as Tory party chairman over his financial affairs.

In an interview with Piers Morgan for TalkTV, the Prime Minister said: “They will be published shortly. As you know the tax filing deadline was just a few days ago. So that’s why. So we do the tax-filing deadlines just passed, so they’re just being prepared and they will be released shortly.”

During the interview, Sunak insisted he can get the economy growing again “this year” as he urged people to “have hope” despite bleak assessments of the UK’s finances.

The Prime Minister said he could quickly turn around the nation’s fortunes after the Bank of England predicted a recession will be shorter and shallower than expected.

But the Bank hiked the base interest rate from 3.5% to 4% in an attempt to help bring double-digit inflation under control.

A day earlier, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicted the UK economy will be the only major economy – including sanction-hit Russia – to plunge into recession this year.

Sunak, in an interview with Piers Morgan for TalkTV, insisted he could deliver the five priorities he has set for the nation.

“Grow the economy, yes, I do believe over the course of this year we’ll get the economy growing again,” the Prime Minister said.

“Reduce debt, We’ve already made some difficult decisions to ensure that that happens but we’ve got to stick to the path.”

Asked what his mantra or message to the public is, Mr Sunak said: “It’s ‘have hope’. Have hope because I can make it better, and I will make it better.

“That’s what I’m working day and night to do.”

Last year, during the G20 summit in Indonesia’s Bali, Rishi Sunak said he would stand by that pledge. Asked whether he was willing to publish his tax return in full, the UK prime minister said: Yes, of course.

“That is the established precedent and I’d be very happy to follow the precedent. In terms of timing, I will have to speak to the Cabinet Office and figure out the right way that happens. But I have no problem doing that,” he added.

Sunak will become the first prime minister since David Cameron to publish tax returns in 2016. Cameron had released a summary of his tax returns from 2009 to 2015 in an attempt to defuse a row over his personal finances.

Meanwhile, Akshata Murthy, who was accused of using her non-domicile status to save millions, will not publish her tax returns.

Akshata is an Indian citizen which entitles her to not pay taxes on her overseas income in the UK. In her case, this income runs into millions. With just 0.93 per cent stake which is worth around £690 million in her father’s tech company Infosys, her dividends come close to £11.6 million. Normally on dividends one would pay tax to the treasury. Her non-dom status relieved her of that tax.
