‘G20 got right presidency at right time’

UK’s Security Minister Tom Tugendhat has lauded India’s G20 presidency for its “incredible importance”, underscoring its adept management in addressing global challenges, particularly food security concerns.

Tugendhat said:  “It’s quite clear to me that this is the right presidency at the right time.”

During its G20 presidency, India has demonstrated a robust commitment to amplifying the voices of the Global South, championing issues like food, fuel, and fertiliser security, along with a strong focus on inclusive global growth, rapid sustainable development goals (SDGs) implementation, and environmentally sustainable progress.

Tugendhat’s visit to India primarily centred around the G20 anti-corruption ministerial meeting held in Kolkata last week. Reflecting on India’s role in international relations, he unequivocally asserted that there is no debate in the UK regarding New Delhi’s status as an “essential ally” of London.

Speaking with PTI in an interview, Tugendhat highlighted India’s commendable global initiative in promoting the consumption and production of millet. He explained how this initiative contributes to mitigating the critical issue of food insecurity.

However, the minister did not hesitate to express his criticism toward Russia for breaching its grain agreement with Kyiv, which has detrimental repercussions on Ukraine’s grain exports. This act, he noted, unfairly impacts poorer nations globally, denouncing the Kremlin’s actions and calling it “brutal” and “completely wrong.”

Tugendhat underlined the importance of India’s G20 presidency in this context, emphasizing that India’s leadership is crucial amidst a myriad of global challenges. He commended India for providing guidance to the G20 during a pivotal period when effective leadership is paramount.

Tugendhat summed up by expressing his gratitude to the Indian government for their proactive efforts and contributions, emphasizing how India’s presidency of the G20 serves as a beacon of leadership and support for nations worldwide.Top of Form
