Washington airports resume operations after tech glitch

The combination of thunderstorms and equipment malfunctions at an FAA facility had earlier caused extensive delays…reports Asian Lite News

After a brief suspension of operations due to an issue at a major air traffic control facility, normal operations at airports in the Washington, D.C., area resumed within an hour, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The FAA announced on Twitter that Reagan and Dulles international airports had restarted operations following repairs to the communications system at the Potomac Terminal Radar Approach Control facility.

During the repair period, departures from National and Dulles airports were temporarily halted.

The combination of thunderstorms and equipment malfunctions at an FAA facility had earlier caused extensive delays for air travelers across the US East Coast, resulting in temporary halts of incoming flights in Washington and New York.

As the evening progressed, flights from the Washington area resumed after the completion of communication repairs, while delays persisted at several airports in the New York area due to earlier thunderstorm-induced ground stops.

The FAA attributed the ground stops to thunderstorms at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta airport, Philadelphia airport, Newark’s Liberty airport, and New York’s JFK and LaGuardia airports.

“The facility has switched to a backup system,” the FAA said in a statement that explained the Washington-area delays.
