Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in London on Wednesday to attend the coronation of King Charles III and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting — a biennial summit of governmental leaders from all Commonwealth nations.
Upon his arrival in London, PM Shehbaz was received by Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom (UK) Moazzam Ahmad Khan and Special Representative of the British Foreign Secretary David Gordon-MacLeod.
During his visit, the prime minister will also engage with other world leaders bilaterally and meet PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif, a tweet on his account said. Prior to his departure, he had hailed Pakistan’s relations with the UK.
He said in a tweet that relations between the two countries were “rooted in shared history and multifaceted bonds that have grown stronger over the decades”. “The British monarch and the royal family have been great friends of Pakistan,” he added.
Trump hits out at Biden for skipping coronation
Donald Trump on Wednesday criticised President Joe Biden for not attending the coronation of King Charles III, as the controversial former US leader toured Scotland and Ireland.
Trump, who is seeking a rematch in next year’s presidential election, branded Biden’s decision to skip Saturday’s landmark crowning in London as “disrespectful”. Biden will represented by his wife First Lady Jill Biden, with UK and US officials noting this is in line with precedent as no president has attended a British sovereign’s coronation.
The last such ceremony occurred in 1953, when Queen Elizabeth II was crowned. “When you have somebody that’s going to be sleeping instead of coming to the coronation as president of the United States, I think it’s a bad thing,” Trump told Britain’s GB News. “It shouldn’t happen. It’s disrespectful,” he told Nigel Farage, a populist British politician and longtime Trump ally, in an interview at one of the latter’s two golf resorts in Scotland.
King Charles hosts singer Lionel Richie
Renowned singer-songwriter Lionel Richie was one of the guests of honour at King Charles’ first garden party at Buckingham Palace days before his coronation. The royal couple opened the doors of the royal residence in London to thousands of guests on Wednesday for the first garden party of King Charles’ reign. Garden parties have been held at Buckingham Palace since the 1860s as a way for the monarch to recognize public service, People reported. Several images surfaced online in which Lionel is seen greeting King Charles.
Also in attendance were Prince Edward and Sophie, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh as well as the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.
Mumbai Dabbawalas buy gifts
Ahead of the coronation ceremony of Britain’s King Charles, the famous Dabbawalas of Mumbai were seen purchasing gifts on Tuesday. 74-year-old King Charles will be formally crowned as monarch on May 6 at Westminster Abbey in London. The Dabbawalas bought Puneri Pagadi and a shawl of the Warkari community. Puner Pagadi is a unique style of turban and is considered a symbol of pride and honour in Pune. Puneri Pagadi was granted the Geographical Indication status in the year 2009.
Dabbawalas said that they have been sent invitations by the British Consulate and the British Embassy.
Quiche is the official coronation food
Britons choosing to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III on Saturday with a typical supermarket quiche will find it costs 21% more than a year ago. The Royal Family has designated a quiche made from spinach, fava beans and tarragon as the event’s official dish. The recipe includes eggs, cream and cheddar cheese.
“Eat hot or cold with a green salad and boiled new potatoes, perfect for a Coronation Big Lunch,” the Royal website says.
Harry-William ‘not speaking’
As Prince Harry is set to attend King Charles’ coronation in London while his Meghan Markle gives the historic ceremony a miss, royal expert Omid Scobie reflected on Prince Harry’s involvement in the event. “This is the first time Harry sees his family face-to-face since the release of Spare but I don’t think people know that there has been somewhat regular pattern of conversation between him and his father since the release of that book,” Omid Scobie said.
