EVENT: World Music Conference

The 8th Annual World Music Conference, themed “The Role of Music in the Prevention and Management of Alzheimer’s Disease,” brought together global experts, researchers, and practitioners to explore the transformative power of music in healthcare, writes Sruthi Ramakrishnan, FRAS

The British Carnatic Choir proudly hosted the 8th Annual Virtual World Music Conference on 7th December 2024, under the distinguished patronage of the United Kingdom Commission for UNESCO UK.

This flagship music conference in the Midlands serves as a platform to unite artists and musicians of all ages, faiths, races, and cultural backgrounds. Its mission is to foster the sharing of intercultural values, practices, and knowledge, highlighting commonalities to promote peace, harmony, and togetherness.

The conference is honoured to have the support of its esteemed Chief Patron, His Excellency Dr. M. Venkatachalam, IFS, Consul General of India in Birmingham, along with Cllr Ken Wood, Lord Mayor of Birmingham; Mr. Richard Parker CBE, Combined Mayor of the West Midlands; and Dr. Derrick Anderson, His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of the West Midlands, Dr. Ramesh Mehta CBE, President, (British Association of Physicians of Asian Origin) BAPIO and Professor J,S.Bamra,CBE, Past Director and Council Member of the British Medical Association (BMA).

‘We are once again delighted to offer Patronage to the World Music Conference for 2024. This inspiring event brings together music communities from around the world to celebrate, share, and learn from one another, thus upholding the notion of building “mutual understanding and a truer and more perfect knowledge of each other’s lives” as laid out in the very founding Constitution of UNESCO.’

The WMC aims to provide a platform that empowers individuals and communities to develop their musical abilities, enhance cognitive skills and creativity, and cultivate a profound appreciation for music.

Held under the esteemed patronage of notable dignitaries, the conference highlighted the potential of music as a non-invasive therapeutic tool to enhance cognitive function, memory, and emotional well-being in individuals living with Alzheimer’s. Through keynote speeches, panel discussions, and real-world case studies, it fostered interdisciplinary collaboration and empowered caregivers with actionable insights to improve patient care.

The 8th World Music Conference showcased an exceptional lineup of keynote speeches delivered by renowned experts in the fields of music, neuroscience, and healthcare. Each speaker brought their unique perspective and expertise to the conference, enriching the discussions on the transformative role of music in the prevention and management of Alzheimer’s disease.

Among the distinguished speakers were

Professor Samuel Quinto FRSA, an accomplished musician and advocate for the therapeutic power of music, who highlighted its universal language and its ability to heal.

 Dr. Jitendra Kumar Sinha, a leading expert in neuroscience, delved into the intricate connections between music and brain function, offering groundbreaking insights into how music therapy can enhance cognitive health.

Dr. Ratnavalli Ellajosyula, a neurologist specializing in dementia care, provided invaluable perspectives on the clinical applications of music therapy for Alzheimer’s patients, emphasizing its non-invasive benefits.

Panel discussion on – The Role of Caregivers and Family in Implementing Music Therapy – 

Professor Leonardo Bonetti, a pioneer in interdisciplinary research, explored the interplay of music and neuroscience, sharing innovative findings that bridge the gap between science and art.

Dr. Alisa Apraleva, an expert in musicology and therapeutic practices, captivated the audience with her analysis of how music interventions can improve emotional well-being and foster connections for individuals living with Alzheimer’s.

The 8th World Music Conference proudly partnered with BAPIO as its Well-Being Partner, alongside an impressive array of premier collaborators from across continents. This global collaboration brought together diverse expertise and perspectives, underscoring the conference’s commitment to fostering a holistic approach to music and wellness.

 The partnerships played a pivotal role in making this year’s event a resounding success, uniting thought leaders and innovators from around the world to explore the transformative power of music in Alzheimer’s care.
