Over a Third of Brits Reuse Dirty Gym Towels

In addition to viral infections, failure to properly clean gym gear can lead to skin problems

A recent survey has revealed that more than a third of Brits are reusing dirty gym towels without washing them, raising concerns over hygiene practices among gymgoers. According to the survey conducted by Live Football Tickets, 36% of participants admitted to not washing their gym towels after each use. Even more startling, 25% of those surveyed said they are not concerned about hygiene when re-wearing gym underwear.

The survey, which polled 2,000 UK residents, also found that only 18% of gymgoers consistently wash their towels after every session. Meanwhile, 12% wait a week before washing their towels, and 3% confessed to washing them only once every two to three weeks.
Health experts are sounding the alarm over the risks of not washing gym towels and workout gear regularly.

Dr. Sham Singh, a health professional, stressed that gym towels and underwear should be washed immediately after use with hot water and disinfectant detergent. “The moisture and body fluids retained on the materials provide an ideal breeding environment for harmful pathogens, such as the norovirus,” Singh explained. They also recommended that gym members wash their gear right after use to prevent infections, as viruses like norovirus and influenza can survive on surfaces for extended periods.

In addition to viral infections, failure to properly clean gym gear can lead to skin problems. Dermatologist Dr. Hamdan Abdullah Hamed warned that unwashed gym wear could lead to acne and fungal infections, particularly in areas of the body where sweat and bacteria build up. “Bacteria from workout clothes can clog pores, leading to acne,” Dr. Hamed noted. “It can also worsen into inflammation and infection if not treated.” Dr. Hamed also highlighted the risk of fungal infections like athlete’s foot, which can result from wearing sweaty socks or workout clothes that haven’t been washed properly.
With the survey results showing that many people are neglecting hygiene when it comes to their gym gear, health professionals are urging gymgoers to adopt better practices and maintain proper hygiene to protect themselves from potential infections and skin issues.
