Filming for Dies Irae began in late March this year at Vadakara in Calicut. Reports had suggested the makers planned to finish shooting within 40 days, but impressively wrapped the project even earlier, by April
Malayalam superstar Mohanlal on Wednesday released an unnerving trailer of director Rahul Sadasivan’s much-anticipated horror thriller, Dies Irae, thrilling fans and film enthusiasts alike.
The film, earlier referred to as #NSS2 before its official title Dies Irae was announced, stars Mohanlal’s son, Pranav Mohanlal, in the lead role.
Mohanlal shared the trailer on his X timeline, writing, “#DIESIRAE official trailer. @impranavlal.”
The trailer opens with an elderly woman telling a man he should have spoken up when he sensed something was wrong with a child. The man replies, “What will people think?” The woman counters, “And now, didn’t that feeling turn out to be true?”
It becomes clear the child they discuss is Pranav Mohanlal’s character, the sole son of a family believed by neighbors to be cursed. He faces eerie, strange experiences but remains unable to share his fears, as no one believes him.
Based on true incidents, Dies Irae is set for release this Halloween.
The horror thriller has generated significant buzz, partly because it is made by the same team behind the cult Malayalam classic Brammayugam, which starred superstar Mammootty.
Filming for Dies Irae began in late March this year at Vadakara in Calicut. Reports had suggested the makers planned to finish shooting within 40 days, but impressively wrapped the project even earlier, by April.
The film’s crew includes acclaimed cinematographer Shehnad Jalal, who also worked on Brammayugam. Art direction is by Jothish Shankar, and editing by Shafique Mohammed Ali, both veterans from the Brammayugam team.
Director Rahul Sadasivan’s previous film, Brammayugam, was a critically acclaimed period horror set in Kerala’s dark ages. The black-and-white film centered on three male characters and featured Mammootty alongside Sidharth Bharathan, Arjun Ashokan, and Amalda Liz. The dialogues were penned by Malayalam novelist TD Ramakrishnan, best known for his novel Francis Itty Cora.
With the blend of a talented cast, experienced crew, and a gripping story inspired by real events, Dies Irae is poised to be a major entry in Malayalam horror cinema this year.
