‘The Phantom of the Opera’ Debuts in India with Record-Breaking Run at NMACC

Cluster billboards and teasers featuring the show’s overture on Spotify sparked anticipation, while unique collaborations with popular food delivery platforms such as Swiggy and Zomato kept the excitement building among audiences

The iconic Broadway production The Phantom of the Opera made its highly anticipated debut in India, marking a historic milestone in the country’s cultural landscape. Hosted at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC), the four-week run of this Andrew Lloyd Webber masterpiece captivated audiences, breaking records and offering a world-class experience for theatergoers.
Premiering on March 5, 2025, The Phantom of the Opera quickly became NMACC’s biggest and most successful international musical of the past year, with over 55,000 viewers attending the 32 performances.

The show’s success marks a monumental achievement for both the venue and the performing arts community in India.
The production, a timeless tale of tragic romance set in the majestic Paris Opera House, featured breathtaking set designs, a live orchestra, and extraordinary performances by a talented cast. The collaboration brought together over 100 artists, including 37 cast members, 17 orchestra musicians, and a dedicated crew, delivering a visually stunning and emotionally charged show. The musical’s intricate staging, accompanied by world-class music and choreography, transported the audience to the heart of Parisian opulence and drama.
The marketing campaign surrounding the musical was just as innovative, drawing in viewers with its creative approach. NMACC’s use of technology and interactive platforms generated immense buzz for the event. CGI visuals of the Phantom’s iconic mask appeared over Mumbai’s Bandra-Worli Sea Link, creating a striking visual presence across the city.

Cluster billboards and teasers featuring the show’s overture on Spotify sparked anticipation, while unique collaborations with popular food delivery platforms such as Swiggy and Zomato kept the excitement building among audiences. Additionally, Snapchat filters featuring the Phantom’s mask and exclusive installations, including mask and rose-studded displays, further amplified engagement, creating an immersive experience even before the curtain went up.
The merchandise store at the venue became a popular stop for fans, offering Phantom-themed items that kept the energy surrounding the musical alive throughout its run. These inventive promotional strategies played a crucial role in the overwhelming reception of the show, ensuring that it reached a broad audience and built a sense of anticipation across the city.

The debut of The Phantom of the Opera also marked the second anniversary of NMACC, founded by philanthropist Nita Ambani. Under her leadership, the Cultural Centre has quickly become a hub for cultural excellence, attracting some of the world’s finest productions. In just two years, NMACC has welcomed over 2 million viewers and hosted more than 7,000 artists, showcasing both international classics and Indian masterpieces. Past productions at the centre include The Sound of Music, MAMMA MIA!, Matilda the Musical, and Life of Pi, alongside Indian works such as The Great Indian Musical: Civilization to Nation.

Reflecting on the success of the musical, Nita Ambani expressed her commitment to bringing the best of global and Indian arts to the country. “This remarkable debut of The Phantom of the Opera is another step toward fulfilling our vision of NMACC as a platform for the finest cultural experiences,” she said. “We are dedicated to inspiring creativity and providing immersive experiences that resonate with audiences from all walks of life.”

As NMACC enters its third year, the success of The Phantom of the Opera underscores the venue’s ongoing commitment to cultural innovation and excellence. The musical’s record-breaking run not only celebrated the anniversary of the Cultural Centre but also set the stage for future productions that promise to continue captivating Indian audiences with groundbreaking performances.
With an unprecedented audience turnout and the overwhelming success of the production, the debut of The Phantom of the Opera at NMACC has firmly established the cultural centre as a key player in the global arts scene. As the year progresses, NMACC’s commitment to bringing world-class entertainment to India remains stronger than ever, setting the stage for even more exceptional performances and immersive cultural experiences in the years to come.
