‘Hulkster’ no more: WWE legend dies at 71

Hogan was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005 after a storied career that saw him win at least six world championships….reports Asian Lite News

The wrestling world and millions of fans around the globe are mourning the death of Hulk Hogan, the most recognisable face of professional wrestling’s golden age. Hogan, born Terry Bollea, died on Thursday morning at the age of 71 after suffering a cardiac arrest in Clearwater, Florida. His passing was confirmed by Florida authorities and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).

The moustachioed showman, famous for his yellow trunks, trademark headscarf, and booming catchphrases, was the force behind WWE’s global explosion in the 1980s and 1990s. From lifting the 500-pound Andre the Giant at WrestleMania III to headlining the first-ever WrestleMania in 1985, Hogan brought professional wrestling into the mainstream — transforming it into a household spectacle and carving out a legacy as one of pop culture’s most enduring icons.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), WWE said: “WWE is saddened to learn WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan has passed away. One of pop culture’s most recognizable figures, Hogan helped WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s. WWE extends its condolences to Hogan’s family, friends, and fans.”

Hogan was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005 after a storied career that saw him win at least six world championships. Even in his later years, he remained a constant presence in the WWE universe, both as a performer and as a mentor to younger stars.

Known for his charisma, unmatched stage presence, and crowd-pleasing energy, Hogan’s larger-than-life personality made him more than just a wrestler — he was a global superstar. From body-slamming giants to flexing his biceps in packed arenas, Hogan became a symbol of American bravado and entertainment in the 80s and 90s.

Tributes poured in from fellow wrestlers and fans alike. Wrestling legend Ric Flair, Hogan’s longtime rival and close friend, shared an emotional message:
“I am absolutely shocked to hear about the passing of my close friend Hulk Hogan! Hulk has been by my side since we started in the wrestling business… No one will ever compare to you! Rest in peace, my friend.”

Charlotte Flair echoed similar sentiments, recalling Hogan’s support when her father was critically ill.
“When I nearly lost my dad 8 years ago, one of the few people who was there for all of it was Hulk Hogan. My heart breaks for Nick and Brooke. Rest in peace, brother.”

John Cena posted a tribute featuring the iconic image from WrestleMania III — the moment when Hogan lifted the seemingly immovable Andre the Giant in front of over 90,000 fans — a feat still regarded as one of wrestling’s greatest moments.

A Political Force and Loyal MAGA Supporter

Outside the ring, Hogan maintained a close friendship with former US President Donald Trump, who paid tribute to the wrestling star in a heartfelt post on Truth Social.

“We lost a great friend today, the ‘Hulkster.’ Hulk Hogan was MAGA all the way — strong, tough, smart, but with the biggest heart,” Trump wrote. “He gave an absolutely electric speech at the Republican National Convention, one of the highlights of the entire week. The cultural impact he had was massive. Hulk Hogan will be greatly missed!”

Hogan made headlines last year when he made a surprise appearance at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Ripping off his shirt in classic fashion, he declared to thunderous applause:
“When [Trump’s] back in the White House, America’s gonna start winning again!”

Though controversies shadowed parts of his career, including lawsuits and personal feuds, Hogan’s popularity remained remarkably resilient. For many fans across generations, he wasn’t just a wrestler — he was a hero, a role model, and a nostalgic symbol of youth and defiance.

His influence transcended the squared circle, appearing in films, cartoons, video games, and talk shows. His signature phrases like “Whatcha gonna do when Hulkamania runs wild on you?” still echo in the minds of fans decades later.

Hogan is survived by his wife Sky, and children Nick and Brooke. Details of memorial arrangements are yet to be announced.

As the wrestling world bids farewell to its brightest star, fans are reminded that legends never truly die — and in the eyes of millions, Hulkamania will live forever.
