U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to declassify records related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., calling it time for Americans to learn the “truth.”
The White House stated, “Providing Americans with the truth after six decades of secrecy.” The order underscores that, after more than 50 years, the families of the victims and the public deserve transparency.
The executive order directs key administration officials to develop a plan for declassifying the documents within 15 days. It specifically calls for the Director of National Intelligence and relevant officials to present a plan for the full release of all JFK assassination records, while records relating to the assassinations of Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. are to be reviewed and fully released within 45 days.
Kennedy was killed in Dallas in 1963, while his brother Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1968 during his presidential campaign, shortly after King’s murder in Memphis, Tennessee.
Trump had previously ordered the declassification of some JFK files during his first term. The President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992 mandated the release of all assassination-related records within 25 years unless the government could prove a need for continued withholding. Despite some delays by the Biden administration, Trump emphasized that the continued withholding of these records is “not in the public interest” and is long overdue.
In keeping with his campaign promise, Trump had repeatedly vowed to release the JFK files, reaffirming his commitment in June 2024. “When I return to the White House, I will declassify and unseal all JFK assassination-related documents. It’s been 60 years, time for the American people to know the TRUTH!” he stated.
