Canada will always stand up for Ukraine: Trudeau

Trudeau reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to its allies and the collective fight to maintain international order…reports Asian Lite News

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has reiterated Canada’s steadfast support for Ukraine, emphasising the global stakes involved in the ongoing war and its impact on international stability. In a speech shared on X (formerly Twitter) under the caption, “Canada will always stand up for Ukraine,” Trudeau underscored that Ukraine’s fight transcends its borders.

“Ukrainians have been fighting and dying not just to protect their sovereignty, their territorial integrity. They’re also fighting to protect the rules-based order that keeps us all safe around the world, and has, for close to eighty years now,” Trudeau said.

Highlighting the significance of upholding global norms, he added, “This period of peace, stability, prosperity for the world happens because we had rules around borders, around not invading your neighbours that Russia chose deliberately to violate a number of years ago.”

Trudeau reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to its allies and the collective fight to maintain international order. “That is why Canada and our allies are unequivocal on standing up against Vladimir Putin’s illegal, immoral, unjust violations of the international order,” he stated. Trudeau further noted his plans to engage with European leaders to discuss continued support for Ukraine and the broader defence of global stability.

Trudeau’s remarks come as international financial backing for Ukraine faces renewed scrutiny. Former US President Donald Trump has recently criticised the United States’ financial contributions to Ukraine’s defence, claiming they vastly exceed Europe’s efforts.

Trump, in a post on Truth Social, alleged that the United States has spent USD 200 billion more than Europe, arguing the war is unwinnable and unnecessary. He criticised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, describing him as a “modestly successful comedian” who convinced the US to invest massively in a conflict Trump believes cannot be resolved without his intervention.

Calling Zelenskyy a “dictator without elections,” Trump also raised concerns about governance and accountability in Ukraine, framing his criticism as a challenge to the direction of Western support.

Trudeau’s unwavering stance, however, signals Canada’s alignment with allies in ensuring Ukraine’s sovereignty and the preservation of international norms.
