Congress Faces Another Whitewash in Delhi Polls

Once a dominant force in Delhi under the late Sheila Dikshit’s 15-year rule, Congress now appears poised for its third consecutive zero-seat finish.

As counting progresses for Delhi’s 70 Assembly constituencies, early trends indicate a major setback for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and a strong surge for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, it is the Congress party’s dismal performance that stands out, with trends suggesting yet another electoral wipeout.

Once a dominant force in Delhi under the late Sheila Dikshit’s 15-year rule, Congress now appears poised for its third consecutive zero-seat finish. The party initially led in the Badli constituency, but its margin quickly eroded, leaving it staring at another complete decimation.

Despite an aggressive campaign by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi, the party has failed to make an impact. While the BJP and AAP have both crossed the 40% vote share mark, Congress remains stuck in single digits at around 6%, a marginal improvement from its 5.44% share in 2020.

The party last won seats in Delhi in 2013, securing eight. Since then, it has struggled to stay relevant, failing to open its account in both the 2015 and 2020 Assembly elections.

In 2015, AAP won 67 out of 70 seats with a 54.3% vote share, while the BJP managed just three with 32%. Congress, despite a 9% vote share, failed to win a single seat. In 2020, the trend continued, with AAP securing 62 seats and the BJP winning eight, while Congress was wiped out with under 5% of the vote.

If the current trends hold, Congress will face a historic three-term electoral shutout in Delhi, raising serious questions about its future in the capital’s political landscape.
