UAE, Canada eye deeper ties

President’s message was delivered to Canadian PM Mike Carney by H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, during his official visit to Ottawa.

President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has conveyed a written message to the Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, affirming the strength of bilateral ties and expressing the UAE’s interest in deepening cooperation across a broad range of strategic sectors. The message was delivered by H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, at the start of his official visit to Ottawa.

The high-level meeting between Sheikh Abdullah and Prime Minister Carney underscored the shared ambition of both countries to reinforce and expand their partnership. The discussions touched on various areas of potential collaboration, including trade and investment, energy, artificial intelligence, education, and emerging technologies. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to leveraging these sectors for mutual growth and the benefit of their citizens.

Sheikh Abdullah emphasised that the UAE and Canada enjoy a longstanding and productive relationship, rooted in mutual respect, shared values, and a forward-looking vision. He noted that the bilateral partnership continues to grow steadily, supported by a framework of cooperation that aligns with both nations’ goals of sustainable development, economic diversification, and global engagement.

Beyond the scope of bilateral ties, Sheikh Abdullah and Prime Minister Carney exchanged views on regional and international developments. The conversation included a discussion on the importance of coordinated efforts to maintain peace, stability, and security in an increasingly complex global environment. Sheikh Abdullah highlighted the UAE’s belief in multilateralism and diplomacy as vital tools to address global challenges.

The meeting was part of a broader series of engagements in the Canadian capital, where Sheikh Abdullah also held talks with several senior officials, including Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Finance Minister François‑Philippe Champagne. These discussions reinforced the desire on both sides to deepen institutional cooperation and accelerate joint initiatives in areas such as sustainable finance, clean energy, and innovation.

The delegation accompanying Sheikh Abdullah reflected the depth and breadth of the UAE’s strategic focus. It included Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation; Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology; Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade; Sultan Al Mansoori, Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs; Saeed Mubarak Al Hajeri, Assistant Foreign Minister for Economic and Trade Affairs; and Abdulrahman Ali Al Neyadi, UAE Ambassador to Canada.

The UAE and Canada have shared formal diplomatic ties since 1974, with embassies and consulates established in both countries. The relationship has matured into a multifaceted partnership, strengthened by visa-free travel arrangements, direct flights, robust trade exchanges, and people-to-people connections. The two countries continue to find common ground in areas such as climate action, digital transformation, and global development.

Earlier this month, President Sheikh Mohamed and Prime Minister Carney spoke via telephone, highlighting their countries’ alignment on issues of global economic stability, energy transition, and the responsible advancement of emerging technologies. Sheikh Abdullah’s current visit builds on that momentum, laying the groundwork for potential memoranda of understanding and expanded bilateral frameworks in the near future.

As both governments signal a willingness to deepen engagement, the UAE’s diplomatic mission in Canada and its economic institutions are expected to play a central role in facilitating partnerships that drive innovation, sustainability, and shared prosperity. The visit serves as a testament to the UAE’s commitment to cultivating high-level relationships with global partners and expanding its diplomatic and economic footprint in North America.
