US pullback on Gaza plan welcomed

The Hamas movement also responded positively, stating that the reversal was a welcome move….reports Asian Lite News

Palestinian, Jordanian, and Egyptian officials have welcomed US President Donald Trump’s decision to abandon his earlier proposal to displace over two million Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, calling it a step in the right direction for regional stability.

Palestinian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Information Nabil Abu Rudeineh described the US shift as “encouraging” and urged Washington to support a broader political framework based on international resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative. “We hope this will lead to a political process that ensures the establishment of a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital,” he said in a statement carried by the official Palestinian news agency WAFA.

The Hamas movement also responded positively, stating that the reversal was a welcome move. Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem urged Trump to reinforce his new position by pressuring Israel to uphold the terms of a ceasefire agreement and halt further aggression against Gaza.

Meanwhile, Jordan’s Foreign Ministry commended Trump’s reversal, reaffirming its commitment to peace efforts that align with the aspirations of the region’s people. Ministry spokesperson Sufian Qudah reiterated that a two-state solution remains the only viable path to long-term security and stability.

Egypt’s Foreign Ministry also expressed appreciation for Trump’s updated stance, stating that it “reflects an understanding of the urgency to prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Gaza.” The ministry emphasised the need for a fair and sustainable resolution to the Palestinian issue.

Trump made his remarks during a joint press conference at the White House with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, stating, “Nobody is expelling any Palestinians from Gaza.”

The announcement marks a significant shift from Trump’s earlier “Gaza Riviera” proposal, unveiled in February, which envisioned a US-led transformation of Gaza into a luxury coastal region after relocating its population. The controversial plan sparked widespread criticism across the Middle East and beyond.
