After a successful opening concert in London, North England is geared up to welcome Bharat Ratna Pt Bhimsen Joshi’s son Pt Shrinivas and grandson Viraj. The father son duo has travelled from Pune to carry forward the legacy of Pt Bhimsen and his Kirana gharana. Aptly named Parampara (meaning legacy) the current tour is planned to regale audience, reports Rahul Laud
Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, one of the greatest Hindustani classical vocalist’s legacies is being kept alive by his son Shrinivas and grandson Viraj not only in India but also globally. Shrinivas-Viraj, the father-son duo will Perform at the Durham University on 11 May followed by Manchester on 17 May.

Here, they will be accompanied by Prof Vijay Rajput, a senior disciple of Panditji, who teaches music at the New Castle University, England. The trio will perform in various cities Organised by socio cultural organisation.

Vedic Organisation for Indian Culture and Education (VOICE). They will be accompanied by Rajput’s son Jay on vocal and tanpura, tabla maestro Saleel Tambe ARPS is a multi-faceted creative genius. An ardent lover of nature and internationally acclaimed award-winning wild life photographer Tambe and singers will be accompanied by Siddhiee Kapshikar on harmonium who recently entered the Guinness Book of World Records.Tambe is a disciple of Pt Ramdas Palsule who is carrying forward the legacy of Taalyogi Pt Suresh Talwalkar.
Shrinivas who did his BTech from IIT Delhi also belongs to the Kirana gharana like his father. Shrinivas and Viraj regularly perform at the Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Festival. He has released an album called Swarakruti which is based on his father’s music and personality. Viraj, in his early 20s, has adapted his singing to the alap-jod-jhala style to synchronize with the traditional Indian classical instrumental approach.

Viraj began his musical journey learning the table and later trained under his father. He is the recipient of Bharat Ratna MS Subbulakshmi fellowship. The legacy tour will also present the all-time favourite bhajans and abhangs of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi in Marathi and Kannada.
