Leading human rights organisations have called on Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to ensure press freedom, release detained journalists, and uphold fundamental rights amid continuing concerns over media independence and freedom of expression.
In a joint letter, the Committee to Protect Journalists along with eight other rights groups urged the government to publicly reaffirm its commitment to protecting journalists and other members of civil society from harassment, arbitrary detention, and legal intimidation. The groups specifically highlighted cases filed under the Digital Security Act and Cyber Security Act, which they say threaten free expression.
“Journalists, musicians, artists, and writers face attacks, threats from violent mobs, and vexatious legal action. Your government should ensure that the law safeguards freedom of expression and protects all citizens from violence or misuse of legislation,” the letter stated.
The groups also cautioned against permanently enshrining provisions from ordinances issued by the former Muhammad Yunus-led interim government, which they said undermine fundamental rights. They called for an end to arbitrary surveillance, censorship, and internet shutdowns while urging the implementation of recommendations from the Media Reform Commission that align with international standards.
Highlighting recent attacks on prominent news outlets such as Prothom Alo and Daily Star in December 2025, the letter demanded prompt and impartial investigations. The signatories stressed that a strong and independent National Human Rights Commission is essential for addressing such violations and preventing future abuses.
The rights organisations also flagged continued threats to minority communities, women, and girls, particularly in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, citing ongoing assaults, torture, and mob violence as challenges to the rule of law.
“Widespread arbitrary detention and attacks on journalists have left freedom of expression at risk. The government has an opportunity to leave a legacy of accountability and systematic reform,” the letter added.
