Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed gratitude to the Indian community in Italy for the warm welcome extended to him in Rome, as he continues his official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between India and Italy.
In a post on social media platform X, he said: “I am very grateful to the Indian community in Italy for the warm welcome in Rome last evening. Their deep affection for India and commitment towards strengthening India-Italy ties are truly commendable. The Indian diaspora continues to make our nation proud across the world.”
The Prime Minister is in Italy on the final leg of a five-nation tour, with engagements focused on expanding cooperation in trade, defence, investment, clean energy, science and technology, and people-to-people exchanges.
During his visit, Modi attended a dinner hosted by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and also visited the Colosseum. He said in a separate post on X: “Upon landing in Rome, had the opportunity to meet Prime Minister Meloni over dinner followed by a visit to the iconic Colosseum. We exchanged perspectives on a wide range of subjects. Looking forward to our talks today, where we will continue the conversation on how to boost the India-Italy friendship.”
Meloni welcomed the Indian leader upon his arrival in Rome, posting on X: “Welcome to Rome, my friend!”
The Prime Minister is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Meloni and meet Italian President Sergio Mattarella during the visit. The discussions are expected to take place at Villa Doria Pamphili, where both sides are likely to adopt a joint declaration aimed at further deepening the India-Italy strategic partnership.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the visit comes at a time of growing momentum in bilateral ties, with both countries working to implement the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029. The framework covers cooperation in trade, investment, defence, clean energy, innovation, science and technology, and people-to-people links.
The ministry said the two countries share a longstanding and multifaceted partnership and noted that the visit is expected to add fresh momentum to the relationship. It also highlighted India’s expanding engagement with Europe, including progress in trade and investment cooperation following recent developments in broader economic agreements.
The Indian community in Italy has played an active role in cultural and economic exchange, and officials have often highlighted the diaspora as an important bridge between the two countries. Modi’s remarks reflect continued emphasis on diaspora engagement as part of India’s foreign policy outreach.
PM Modi last visited Italy in June 2024 to attend the G7 Summit, and this latest visit further builds on sustained high-level exchanges between the two governments.
The ongoing discussions in Rome are expected to shape the next phase of India-Italy cooperation across strategic sectors, with both sides seeking deeper alignment on global and regional issues.
