Trump Threatens 100% Tariffs Over Europe’s Tech Tax Plans

President Donald Trump warns European countries considering digital services taxes on US technology firms that they could face immediate 100% tariffs on exports to America, reports Asian Lite News Desk

US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 100% tariff on imports from any European country that introduces a digital services tax on American technology companies, escalating tensions over taxation and transatlantic trade.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said several European nations were considering new levies on US technology giants and warned that any country proceeding with such plans would face immediate trade retaliation.

“Numerous European countries” were discussing digital services taxes, he said, adding that some were close to introducing them. Trump declared that any such measure would trigger a 100% tariff on all goods exported to the United States from the country concerned.

“Please let this statement serve to represent that any Country that imposes such a Tax will immediately be met with a 100% TARIFF on any and all Goods sent to the United States of America,” Trump wrote. He added that the tariffs would override any existing bilateral trade agreements.

The comments have raised questions about the potential impact on the UK, which introduced its Digital Services Tax (DST) in 2020. Britain currently levies a 2% tax on the UK revenues of large search engines, social media platforms and online marketplaces with global digital revenues exceeding £500 million and UK revenues above £25 million.

The tax applies to several major US technology firms, including Apple, Google, Meta and Amazon. According to HM Treasury, the measure raised more than £800 million during the 2024-25 financial year, up from £678 million the previous year.

Trump has repeatedly criticised digital services taxes, arguing that they unfairly target American companies. In April, he warned that the UK could face “a big tariff” because of its tax on large US technology firms.
