UAE brokers fresh prisoner swap

UAE-brokered mediation delivers another major humanitarian breakthrough as Russia and Ukraine exchange 314 captives, coinciding with renewed trilateral talks hosted in Abu Dhabi….reports Asian Lite News

The United Arab Emirates has successfully mediated a fresh exchange of captives between Russia and Ukraine, reinforcing its growing role as a trusted diplomatic bridge amid one of Europe’s most protracted conflicts. The latest operation saw the release of 314 captives, with 157 exchanged by each side, bringing the total number of detainees freed through UAE-led mediation efforts to 4,955.

The exchange marks the eighteenth successful mediation facilitated by the UAE since the outbreak of the conflict and comes at a sensitive diplomatic moment, coinciding with Abu Dhabi hosting the second round of trilateral talks involving Russia, Ukraine and the United States. The timing underlines both the UAE’s sustained engagement in humanitarian diplomacy and the confidence placed in it by international stakeholders seeking de-escalation and dialogue.

In a statement, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed appreciation to both Moscow and Kyiv for their cooperation, noting that the successful exchange reflected a shared trust in the UAE’s neutral and constructive role. The ministry said the outcome underscored the depth of the UAE’s relations with both countries and reaffirmed its commitment to alleviating the humanitarian consequences of a conflict now entering its fourth year.

The ministry added that the continued success of these mediation efforts demonstrated the UAE’s belief that humanitarian action must remain insulated from political deadlock. It reiterated that facilitating prisoner exchanges remained a critical confidence-building measure capable of easing suffering while creating space for broader diplomatic progress.

The significance of the exchange was further amplified by the launch of the second round of trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi, bringing together delegations from Russia, Ukraine and the United States. The discussions were seen as a cautious but meaningful step towards sustaining diplomatic engagement, even as a comprehensive political settlement remains elusive.

H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, said the commencement of the talks sent positive signals about the seriousness of the parties involved and their shared responsibility to reduce humanitarian suffering. He noted that hosting the talks reflected international confidence in the UAE’s ability to foster dialogue and advance diplomatic solutions during complex global crises.

Sheikh Abdullah highlighted the importance of the close personal and diplomatic relationships maintained by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He said these ties had played a pivotal role in strengthening mutual trust, enabling mediation efforts and helping bridge differences between the two sides.

He expressed appreciation to both President Putin and President Zelenskyy, as well as their respective negotiating teams, for what he described as constructive engagement. He also acknowledged the role of the United States in supporting the diplomatic track, thanking US President Donald Trump for his leadership and the American delegation for contributing to discussions aimed at advancing stability and peace.

According to Sheikh Abdullah, the two rounds of talks held in Abu Dhabi resulted in productive discussions that identified areas of common ground. He said the UAE would continue to provide a supportive and neutral environment for dialogue, with the objective of narrowing divisions and encouraging pragmatic solutions that prioritise humanitarian needs.

The UAE’s mediation strategy, officials noted, is rooted in balanced relations, strategic partnerships and a longstanding commitment to dialogue over confrontation. Sheikh Abdullah reaffirmed that cooperation during times of hardship represents a moral and humanitarian responsibility, stressing that sustained engagement is essential to mitigating the conflict’s wider regional and global impacts.

International reactions suggested cautious optimism. US President’s Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said representatives from the three countries had reached consensus on the prisoner exchange following what he described as specific and constructive discussions. He cautioned, however, that far greater efforts would be required to advance a comprehensive political settlement.

Despite the positive developments, uncertainty remains over the next phase of negotiations. No timetable has been announced for a further round of talks, reflecting the fragility of the diplomatic process. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that additional peace discussions involving US and Russian delegations were expected soon, with further meetings likely to take place in the United States.
