Khan, Mamdani Bond Over Trump

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has said he has exchanged messages with New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and that both are keen to work together on shared urban challenges…reports Asian Lite News

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has said he and New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani have exchanged messages and are keen to work together, as he highlighted the similarities in the pressures facing the two global cities and the political challenges confronting their leadership.

Khan made the remarks in a new interview in which he discussed the cost of living crisis, housing pressures and the wider political context shaping his third term in office. He said that although no formal meeting has yet been arranged, he and Mamdani had already been in contact and shared an interest in collaboration.

“We will have to wait and see. We’re both very busy being mayors of great cities,” Khan said when asked whether he planned to meet his New York counterpart. He added that the two leaders had been in communication and were open to working together on areas of mutual concern.

“We’ve messaged, of course,” he said. “And we are keen to work together on any issues we can. We both face cost-of-living challenges, similar challenges in relation to addressing the housing crisis and we’re both trying to help residents of our cities in terms of addressing those issues.”

Khan, 55, is approaching the halfway point of his third term as mayor of London. He said that beyond economic and social pressures, both he and Mamdani are navigating the political impact of former US president Donald Trump, who is again a dominant figure in American politics.

“We both have a challenge in President Trump to deal with, but I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do together,” Khan said, suggesting that the relationship between major city leaders can become more important when national politics are strained.

He stressed that cooperation between cities should continue regardless of tensions at the level of national governments. “I’m a believer in collaboration rather than competition, so let’s see what happens in New York,” the Labour Party politician said.

Despite the serious subject matter, Khan also struck a light-hearted tone when talking about Mamdani. “Zohran is young, charismatic, good looking, so I hate him, obviously,” he said, in a joking reference to his American counterpart.

Khan’s comments indicate a willingness to explore joint approaches to common urban problems such as housing affordability, rising living costs and social inequality, even though no specific initiatives have yet been announced. For now, he said both leaders remain focused on governing their respective cities while staying in touch.

The remarks also come against the backdrop of Khan’s long-running public disagreements with Trump. He previously called Trump “racist” and “Islamophobic” after Trump told the United Nations that London had a “terrible, terrible mayor” and claimed the city was embracing “Sharia law”.

Khan has consistently rejected those claims and has positioned himself as a vocal critic of Trump’s rhetoric. His latest comments suggest that while relations between national leaders can be confrontational, city-level diplomacy and cooperation remain possible.

There has been no confirmation from the New York mayor’s office about plans for a meeting or joint projects, and Khan did not provide a timeline for any future engagement. However, his remarks underline the growing importance of large cities working together on shared challenges in an era of economic pressure and political uncertainty.
