Connecticut: Muslim lawmaker assaulted after Eid Al-Adha service

Rep. Mayram Khanexpressed concern over the lack of security at one of the largest Muslim gatherings in Hartford on the day of Eid….reports Asian Lite News

A Connecticut state legislator, Rep. Mayram Khan, spoke out publicly for the first time about the attack she endured after leaving a Muslim prayer service. Khan revealed that she suffered multiple physical injuries, including an attempted sexual assault and violent physical assault. She expressed gratitude to the courageous individuals who came to her aid, chasing down her assailant until police arrived.

Khan highlighted their bravery, emphasising that their actions potentially saved the lives of herself, her children, and other Muslim women and children still present at the XL Center event in Hartford.

While Khan remains on a journey of physical and emotional healing, she expressed concern over the lack of security at one of the largest Muslim gatherings in Hartford on the day of Eid.

Farhan Memon, chair of the Connecticut chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, previously stated that the assailant made obscene remarks, grabbed Khan, hit her, and threw her to the ground, the Associated Press reported.

The suspect, Andrey Desmond, is currently held on charges including misdemeanor assault, unlawful restraint, breach of peace, and interfering with police. Authorities have mentioned the possibility of additional charges. Desmond allegedly made lewd comments, attempted to kiss Khan, and then proceeded to slap her, causing her to fall and suffer minor injuries. Khan told police that she does not know Desmond.
