New Cyprus-US defence deal to tackle regional crises

The agreement is designed to improve the response capabilities of both nations to regional humanitarian crises and security challenges…reports Asian Lite News

Cyprus and the United States have formalised their commitment to enhanced bilateral defence cooperation through a newly signed framework agreement.

This agreement is designed to improve the response capabilities of both nations to regional humanitarian crises and security challenges, including those exacerbated by climate change.

The accord was celebrated as a significant milestone in the growing relationship between Cyprus and the US, which recently saw the lifting of a long-standing arms embargo imposed on the island nation in 2022.

Cyprus Defence Minister Vassilis Palmas and US Assistant Secretary of Defence for International Security Affairs Celeste Wallander both lauded the agreement.

Wallander highlighted Cyprus’s crucial role as a strategic partner in Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, noting its importance at the crossroads of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

She commended Cyprus for providing refuge to American civilians evacuated from Sudan and Israel in the previous year and for facilitating a maritime corridor to Gaza that allowed the delivery of over 20 million pounds of humanitarian aid.

Palmas emphasized Cyprus’s commitment to deepening defense ties with the US, aiming for a more robust and mutually beneficial relationship.

The agreement also includes provisions for joint efforts to counter malicious actions and improve the interoperability of Cypriot and US military forces, further solidifying their strategic partnership.
