Chennai Health Officials Alert as Two HMPV Cases Emerge

Chennai Health Officials on Alert as Two Children Recover from Rare Respiratory Virus…reports Asian Lite News

Two children in Chennai have tested positive for Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) and are currently recovering, health officials confirmed on Monday.

The children, admitted with symptoms such as fever, cold, and cough, were diagnosed with HMPV following medical evaluations. The first case was reported at a private hospital in Chetpet, where a child presented with respiratory symptoms. A second case emerged at a pediatric hospital in Guindy, with a child showing similar symptoms.

Tamil Nadu Health Department officials stated that both children are responding well to treatment. In response to these cases, the department has initiated proactive measures to prevent further spread of the virus.

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus identified in 2001, affects primarily young children, older adults, and individuals with compromised immune systems. The virus is related to the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and can cause symptoms ranging from mild cold-like signs to severe conditions such as pneumonia and bronchitis.

Common symptoms include fever, cough, nasal congestion, shortness of breath, wheezing, and fatigue. Severe cases may necessitate hospitalization, particularly for vulnerable populations like infants and the elderly.

State Health Department officials are currently discussing the implementation of safety protocols and preventive measures across Tamil Nadu. HMPV shares transmission characteristics with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, spreading through respiratory secretions, close contact, and contaminated surfaces.

At present, there is no vaccine available for HMPV, and antiviral treatments are not recommended. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to mitigate any potential outbreak.
