Yunus Invites Musk to Launch Starlink in Bangladesh

Muhammad Yunus emphasised that Starlink would complement Grameen Bank’s efforts in empowering village women and young entrepreneurs, helping them gain access to global opportunities.

Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, announced plans to collaborate with Tesla CEO Elon Musk to introduce Starlink satellite internet services in Bangladesh. Following a meeting with Musk on Thursday, Yunus shared his optimism on X, stating, “Had a great meeting with Mr @elonmusk. We agreed to work together. Hoping to launch Starlink in Bangladesh soon together with him.”

During the discussion, conducted via video conference, Yunus highlighted the transformative potential of Starlink’s high-speed, low-cost internet, particularly for underserved regions in Bangladesh. He extended an invitation to Musk to visit the country for the service’s official launch. Musk responded positively, saying, “I look forward to it.”

The meeting included key representatives such as Khalilur Rahman, High Representative for the Rohingya crisis, and Lamiya Morshed, Principal Coordinator of SDGs, on behalf of Bangladesh, alongside SpaceX executives Lauren Dreyer and Richard Griffiths.

The collaboration aims to bridge Bangladesh’s digital divide, empowering rural communities, women, and youth through enhanced connectivity. Yunus emphasised that Starlink would complement Grameen Bank’s efforts in empowering village women and young entrepreneurs, helping them gain access to global opportunities. Musk praised the Grameen Bank model, recognising its role in poverty alleviation and financial inclusion.

Yunus expressed his excitement about leveraging technology to drive Bangladesh’s social and economic growth. “They would become global women, kids, and entrepreneurs,” Yunus said, envisioning a digitally empowered future for the nation.

In addition to his engagement with Yunus, Musk also recently met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss technology and innovation, further solidifying his global outreach in fostering transformative collaborations.
