UK: Nod for clean energy to power 7.5 mn homes

Seventeenth major clean energy project since July 2024 approved, set to power hundreds of thousands of homes and support more than a thousand jobs as UK pushes toward energy independence…reports Asian Lite News

The government has approved the Tillbridge Solar Farm in Lincolnshire, marking the seventeenth nationally significant clean energy project given the go-ahead since July 2024. Together, these projects are expected to generate enough clean power to supply the equivalent of more than 7.5 million homes across the UK.

According to the developer, the Tillbridge project will support around 1,250 jobs and provide electricity for hundreds of thousands of homes, giving a substantial boost to the government’s mission to make Britain a clean energy superpower.

The new solar development is the latest in a series of major renewable energy projects designed to strengthen Britain’s energy security and reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels. The government said solar power remains the cheapest form of energy generation available, forming a key part of the strategy to lower bills permanently and secure homegrown energy sources.

A spokesperson said the project would help families and businesses across the country by increasing the supply of affordable, renewable energy. “Families and businesses will benefit from more solar power, the cheapest form of power available, as the government today approves a major new solar power project,” the statement read.

The government also emphasised its approach to maximising solar on rooftops, noting that households can save around £500 a year on energy bills by installing solar panels. Alongside large-scale solar farms, rooftop solar is expected to play a crucial role in meeting clean energy goals while cutting costs for consumers.

In addition to national benefits, the government is consulting on proposals to introduce mandatory community benefits for areas hosting ground-mounted solar farms. This would mean that residents living near such projects would directly benefit through funding for local priorities, including education programmes, grassroots sports facilities, or transport improvements.

Developers of the Tillbridge Solar Farm have pledged to ensure the local community gains from the project. “Developers for the Tillbridge project have committed to ensuring the local community benefits from the project,” the government confirmed.

Energy Minister Michael Shanks said the project represents a significant step toward securing Britain’s energy independence. “Families across Lincolnshire and the rest of the country have seen their energy bills go through the roof as a result of our exposure to volatile gas prices,” he said. “Solar is one of the cheapest and quickest power sources we can build, it is crucial in our mission to make Britain a clean energy superpower – giving us energy security, good jobs and growth across the country.”

The approval of the Tillbridge Solar Farm comes at a time when households and businesses are still struggling with the impact of high energy costs. The government noted that the UK’s dependence on volatile global gas markets has contributed to the biggest cost-of-living crisis in memory, with gas prices still around 75% higher than before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Officials said that accelerating investment in clean, homegrown power was the only long-term way to protect bill-payers from future price shocks.

The list of clean energy projects approved since July 2024 reflects the scale of the government’s commitment to renewables. These include Gate Burton Energy Park, Mallard Pass Solar Project, Sunnica Energy Farm, Cottam Solar Project, Rivenhall IVMF and Energy Centre, Heckington Fen Solar Park, West Burton Solar Project, Immingham Green Energy Terminal, North Lincolnshire Green Energy Park, Rampion 2 Offshore Wind Farm, Viking CCS Pipeline, East Yorkshire Solar Farm, Oaklands Farm Solar Park, Mona Offshore Windfarm, Byers Gill Solar, and Morgan Offshore Wind Project.

Together, these projects are expected to contribute significantly to Britain’s transition away from fossil fuels and toward sustainable energy sources. The government’s estimates suggest that the combined annual generation from the projects could power more than 7.5 million homes, based on current household consumption data.

The energy capacity will operate alongside the rest of the electricity system to serve both homes and businesses, though the actual generation will vary depending on local site conditions. The calculations are based on household electricity consumption figures from the 2023 Subnational Electricity and Gas Consumption Report and technology-specific load factors published in the AR7 allocation framework.

The approval of the Tillbridge Solar Farm marks a continuing trend in the UK’s shift toward renewable energy infrastructure. With costs for solar energy now lower than any other form of power generation, the government’s clean energy strategy aims to deliver long-term energy security while stimulating economic growth and creating skilled jobs in the green sector.

For local communities, the benefits extend beyond cheaper and cleaner power. Through the proposed community funding mechanisms, residents living near projects like Tillbridge could see direct investments in local development initiatives, helping make the transition to clean energy both inclusive and locally rewarding.

The Tillbridge project adds to a growing national effort to ensure that Britain’s future energy is secure, sustainable, and affordable. As the government continues to approve large-scale clean energy developments, it reinforces its message that solar and other renewables are not only essential for meeting climate targets but also for protecting households from the unpredictable global energy market.
