At the demonstration outside the Salt Lake International Bus Terminus near Kolkata, protesters torched Dhakai Jamdani sarees of Bangladesh…reports Asian Lite News

Protests were held in various parts of West Bengal on Sunday over the alleged atrocities on minority Hindus in Bangladesh.

Hundreds of people joined the protest rallies organised by Hindutva groups in Kolkata, Kanthi, Kakdwip, Sandeshkhali and Purulia, calling for the immediate release of Hindu leader Chinmoy Krishna Das.

At the demonstration outside the Salt Lake International Bus Terminus near Kolkata, protesters torched Dhakai Jamdani sarees from Bangladesh.

They called for a boycott of Bangladeshi goods, warning that Indians wouldn’t remain silent if the disrespect toward the tricolour and attacks on Hindus continued.

“We condemn the continuous targeting of Hindus in Bangladesh and the hate-driven narratives against India. We will not sit idle and with burning the Jamdani sarees, we urge people to boycott Bangladeshi products,” said a protestor.

“What kind of Bangladesh is this? The people who fought for liberation in 1971 now seem to be erasing their own history,” said another protestor.

Leading the protest rally in Kanthi, the state’s Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said ‘sanatanis’ were united against rising fundamentalist forces in Bangladesh.

“The martyrdom of 30,000 Indian soldiers in the 1971 Bangladesh liberation war has been forgotten by the Islamists in the neighbouring country. Today’s rally is a wake-up call to the elements across the border to stop rabble-rousing rhetoric,” he said.

When asked about anti-India statements by Bangladeshi groups, Adhikari said that following international protocol and UN guidelines, the Narendra Modi government will take appropriate steps at the right moment.

    Bangladesh optimistic about resolving standoff

Bangladesh and India will be able to overcome the stalemate in the relationship witnessed in recent months, Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain said here on Sunday.

His comments came ahead of Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s visit to Bangladesh on Monday during which he is likely to raise with Dhaka India’s concerns over attacks on Hindus after a massive uprising ended deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year rule in August.

This will be the first visit to be made by a senior Indian government official to Bangladesh since the interim government came to power on August 8.

“We expect that we will be able to overcome this impasse. Establishing mutual communication and meeting each other is very important to overcome any such stalemate,” Hossain told a seminar titled ‘SAARC – People of South Asia Crave’ at the National Press Club. “I hope they (foreign secretaries) will have a fruitful discussion,” he said.

He noted that it is important to acknowledge that there is a problem if they want to solve any problem.Hossain, a career diplomat, said it is also important to note that the relations between Bangladesh and India witnessed changes after August 5, and both sides need to try and take forward the relations and accept this changed reality.

The downturn that the two countries witnessed over the last few months in terms of bilateral business activities affected both sides, he said. He also referred to the impacts on businesses in Kolkata and West Bengal.

Bangladesh’s foreign office spokesperson Mohammad Rafiqul Alam said efforts were made to keep all the elements of the bilateral relations on the agenda during the Foreign Office Consultation with India. He described trade, border management, connectivity, and water issues as the key areas expected to be discussed.

The close ties between India and Bangladesh came under severe strain after Hasina was forced to leave the country in the face of a massive anti-government protest in August. Yunus came to power days after Hasina took shelter in India.

The relations deteriorated further in recent weeks over attacks on Hindus and the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das.

There have been a spate of incidents of violence against Hindus and other minorities as well as attacks on temples in the neighbouring country in the last few weeks that triggered strong concerns in New Delhi.

“Our position on the matter is very clear — the interim government must live up to its responsibility of protecting all minorities,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on November 29.

India also hoped that the case relating to Bangladeshi monk Chinmoy Krishna Das, arrested on a charge of sedition, would be dealt with in a just, fair and transparent manner.

Kathmandu-based SAARC Journalists Forum organised Sunday’s seminar. Bangladesh interim government’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus in several media interviews expressed his desire to revive the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) as a vibrant regional grouping for mutual benefit. Hossain said Yunus was very sincere to revitalise the SAARC.

Kolkata top cop removed as Mamata agrees to doctors’ demands

This comes in wake of demands by West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front and Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) to remove Kolkata Commissioner of Police..reports Asian Lite News

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after meeting with the protesting junior doctors announced that she has agreed to most of doctors’ demands — the removal of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal and removal of health department officials.

“Given the demand of junior doctors, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal has said in the meeting that he is ready to resign,” said Mamata Banerjee while addressing the protesting doctors on Tuesday.

She said Vineet Goyal would hand over the responsibility to the new CP at 4 pm on Tuesday, adding that her government has decided to accept demands laid down by junior doctors.

Also, deputy commissioner North, Abhishek Gupta will be removed, said CM Banerjee.

“We tried listening to junior doctors…we have decided to change the DC (Kolkata Police Commissioner)…he agreed to resign himself…in the health department, they demanded the removal of 3 persons and we agreed for 2. We have agreed 99%, what else can we do? We have requested the junior doctors to come back to work so that the common citizens won’t suffer…” she said.

“… We have accepted 3 of their 4 demands… DC North (Abhishek Gupta) will also be removed and a decision will be taken about the new DC tomorrow. Apart from this, full attention will also be paid to the security of the doctors…” she added.

This comes in wake of demands by West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front and Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) to remove Kolkata Commissioner of Police as well as the replacement of all the senior officials in the Health and Family Welfare Department of the Mamata Government.

On Monday, West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front and Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) held a press conference in the national capital and laid down their demands.

Amid the ongoing protest against the rape and murder of the second-year postgraduate trainee doctor inside a seminar room of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College on August 9, the front noted down five-point demands, which include the call for justice for the victim “Abhaya” and to expedite the investigation process in the case.

They also demanded the removal of the Director of Medical Education (DME), the Director of Health Services (DHS), and the Health Secretary from the Department of Health and Family Welfare of the West Bengal Government.

The front called for “action against incompetent and complacent police authorities” and demanded the removal of Kolkata Commissioner of Police Vineet Goyal as well as the Deputy Commissioner of Police of North and Central for administrative failure and alleged evidence tampering. (ANI)

RG Kar victim’s mother slams Mamata

Interacting with mediapersons on Monday, the Chief Minister said, “If you stay on the roads every night, it will cause inconvenience to many people, especially the elders…reports Asian Lite News

The mother of the junior doctor who was found raped and murdered at the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Monday questioned the appeal made by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that the protestors should return to festival mood ahead of next month’s Durga Puja and refrain from stating mass agitations.

Interacting with mediapersons on Monday, the Chief Minister said, “If you stay on the roads every night, it will cause inconvenience to many people, especially the elders. There is a bar on using microphones after 10 p.m. which we have ignored so far. I will request all of you to get back into festival mood. I will also request the CBI to ensure justice in the RG Kar case.”

“All the lights of the festival at my residence have extinguished following the horrific end met by my daughter. In such a mental state, how can I ask the protesters to return to festive mood? What the Chief Minister said was an attempt to end the spontaneous protests demanding justice for my daughter,” the victim’s mother told the media after the Chief Minister issued the appeal through media from the state Secretariat Nabanna.

The protesting junior doctors also found the Chief Minister’s appeal ‘highly insensitive’.

According to them, the appeal is an attempt to isolate the protesting representatives of the medical fraternity from the people who have joined the protests spontaneously from different walks of life.

The junior doctors also did not buy the Chief Minister’s claim that although Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal met her with the intention of resigning from his post, she did not accept his proposal keeping in mind the forthcoming festive season starting with Durga Puja (October 9-13).

According to them, not accepting Goyal’s resignation is equivalent to insulting the mass demand for his removal from the chair.

“Using the festival season as an excuse is unacceptable,” a protesting doctor said.

Meanwhile, Bengal BJP President and Union Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar said the Chief Minister does not have the right to dictate people as to when they will end their agitation on such a sensitive issue.

“Entire Bengal is in a state of shock. Even elderly persons who never walked in any procession in their lives are now on the streets condemning the ghastly rape-murder. But instead of expressing solidarity with the spontaneous protesters, the Chief Minister is asking them to get into festival mood. This is simply unacceptable,” Majumdar said.

Mamata Banerjee urges doctors to return to duty, refutes offering money to deceased doctor’s family…reports Asian Lite News

Amid ongoing protests over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a state-run hospital in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged doctors to return to work and denied offering money to the family of a deceased doctor who was raped and murdered in Kolkata.

During an administrative review meeting at Nabanna Sabhaghar, Banerjee stated, “The Supreme Court has requested doctors to resume work immediately. I also request that they return to duty, and if they wish to meet me, they are always welcome.”

Banerjee encouraged people to “return to festivities” as Durga Puja approaches, and requested junior doctors to resume duty as soon as possible. She dismissed accusations of offering money to the victim’s family as “slander” and a conspiracy involving the Centre and left parties.

“I have never offered money to the deceased doctor’s family, this is nothing but slander . I told the deceased doctor’s parents that if they wanted to do something in their daughter’s memory, our government is with them. Kolkata Commissioner of Police, Vineet Goyal, offered to resign after RG Kar protests, but we need someone who knows law and order ahead of Durga Puja,” she said.

On Monday, the Supreme Court reminded that no action should be taken against doctors once they return to work by tomorrow, 5 pm, while hearing the case related to the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

However, the court noted that if they fail to do so, the court will not be able to restrain the state government, and further absence from work might lead to disciplinary action against them.

She further stated that if they have any demands, they need to put them forward to the health department, and it would be accepted by them. She further mentioned, that, according to a complaint, two doctors were already suspended.

“We accepted all your demands; just meet with the health department regarding this. According to a complaint, two doctors were already suspended,” she added.

Banerjee alleged that migrant workers from Rajasthan were attacked in Odisha, with three reported deaths, and claimed that Bengalis were being targeted in the BJP-ruled state. She emphasised that such incidents would not be tolerated in West Bengal.

Banerjee also accused outsiders of increased crime in the state and requested them to take “responsibility.” Regarding the Aparajita Women and Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill, 2024, she said, “Aprajita bill implementation is our priority; if the bill is approved, the bill will be implemented.”

She also urged the officials to maintain the health infrastructure and to make sure that no action is taken against the doctors.

Banerjee accused outsiders of increasing crime in the state and requested them to take responsibility. She alleged that the ongoing protests were a conspiracy by the Centre and CPI-M, and that the Reclaim the Night movement was causing disturbance for senior citizens.

“Some people taking advantage of turmoil in neighbouring countries have forgotten that India, Bangladesh are separate nations,” Banerjee said.

Mamata Banerjee further instructed the district magistrates and the superintendents of police to be on high alert during Durga Puja and also requested the Election Commission to extend the registration of voter ID cards by one month due to puja preparations.

A second-year postgraduate medical student was raped and murdered inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College on August 9.

    Opposition slam Didi’s remarks

Mamata Banerjee’s appeal that people protesting on the streets should return to festival mood ahead of next month’s Durga Puja has drawn scathing criticism from the opposition parties and a section of the protesters.

According to Bengal BJP President and Union Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar, the Chief Minister does not have the right to dictate people as to when they will end their agitation on such a sensitive issue.

CPI(M) central committee member Sujan Chakraborty said the forthcoming Durga Puja cannot be used as an excuse to bridle the spontaneous public protests against the R.G. Kar tragedy.

“Let the festival and protests continue side by side,” Chakraborty said.

Rimjhim Sinha, who has become the face of the protests by women on the issue, said people should decide whether they will continue with the protests or get swayed in festival mood.

“The protest is not just against what has already happened. It is also to ensure such things are not repeated in the future,” she said.

Didi To Push Bill For Capital Punishment For Rapists

Mamata Banerjee said her government will move a Bill in the state Assembly within 10 days seeking capital punishment for culprits in rape and murder cases….reports Asian Lite News

Under fire after the ghastly rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Wednesday that her government will pass a Bill in the Assembly to ensure capital punishment for convicts in rape and murder cases.

“We will move a Bill in the state Assembly within 10 days seeking capital punishment for culprits in rape and murder cases. We will send it to the Governor, and if he doesn’t pass the Bill, we will sit on indefinite protest outside the Raj Bhavan. This Bill must be passed… He cannot evade accountability this time. Why should rapists not be hanged,” Banerjee asked while addressing an even to mark the foundation day of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), her party’s students’ wing.

Echoing the statements of Trinamool General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee, who spoke just before her, the Chief Minister questioned the progress made by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probing the R.G. Kar rape and murder case, 14 days after the case was handed over to the probe agency by the Calcutta High Court.

“The progress of the investigation has been ruined after the case was handed over to the CBI,” the Chief Minister claimed.

She also complemented the Kolkata Police and West Bengal Police for the manner in which they handled the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ (March to Secretariat) on Tuesday, saying: “I salute my police. They maintained restrain even after they were attacked. They did not fall into the trap of the BJP which is doing politics over bodies.”

The Chief Minister also gave a call to the junior doctors of Bengal to resume their duties in the state-run hospitals keeping in mind the interest of the patients going there for treatment.

Describing the rape and murder incident as thoroughly unfortunate, Banerjee said now it remains to be seen that no errors are made in the follow-up action in the matter.

“That is why we wanted to complete the investigation quickly so that the trial could be conducted on a fast-track basis,” the Chief Minister said.

Bengal govt opposes any pact on Teesta Water, says Mamata

Mamata Banerjee on Monday lashed out at the BJP leaders for demanding the incorporation of north Bengal to north-eastern states and said we will never let this happen…reports Asian Lite News

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday affirmed that her state will oppose any kind of agreement between India-Bangladesh on the Teesta River, as sharing of Teesta water will mean “depriving north Bengal of water.”

Opposing the Teesta Water Treaty while addressing legislative assembly, Banerjee said, “My government will oppose any agreement between India and Bangladesh over sharing of the Teesta river water, as sharing of Teesta water will mean depriving north Bengal of water.”

She further lashed out at the Centre and stated, “Without consulting West Bengal, they’re doing Teesta Water Treaty. Why they allow 14 Hydro Power Plants on Teesta in Sikkim? I am repeatedly saying that there is not enough water in Teesta River and we can’t supply water to Bangladesh from it. If we will supply water to Bangladesh, then most areas of North Bengal will face water crisis. This is one sided decision.”

Mamata Banerjee on Monday lashed out at the BJP leaders for demanding the incorporation of north Bengal to north-eastern states and said we will never let this happen.

Addressing the State Legislative Assembly, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “They are trying to divide Bengal. We will never accept this. We will protest against this, the people of Bengal will protest against this. I’m elected by the people of Bengal; this is my liability to take care of state.”

Taking it further, she said, “It’s a shame, I condemn the proposal of North Bengal divide. BJP MLAs actually don’t have the guts to face the reality of situation, they always walkout and do politics with state. They are media concerned and nothing else.”

This statement comes after BJP’s West Bengal State President Sukanta Majumdar written a letter to PM Modi demanding the incorporation of north Bengal with north eastern India.

Hitting out at the BJP’s Nishikant Dubey’s statement of declaring Malda and Murshidabad as Union Territory, Banerjee stated, “BJP is trying to defame Bengal. After winning, they are talking about dividing Bengal. Someone is saying to divide north Bengal from the West Bengal while others are saying to make Malda and Murshidabad a Union Territory.”

She further informed that about her proposal of Indo-Bhutan river commission in the NITI Aayog Meeting and demanded for its formation.

“In the NITI Aayog meeting, I proposed the Indo-Bhutan river commission formation issue. I recorded this issue in the meeting, as Bengal suffers from it. There are flood issues. Also, I direct the state government officials to go and meet irrigation department and finance department and solve out the issue. During rainy season, North Bengal faced flood situation. I also proposed to the Speaker, he should send assembly representative to central government to raise this issue.”

Speaking on the budget allocation for floods states like Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Assam, etc, Banerjee asserted, “Salute to the BJP government for this discrimination, Assam and Bihar gets the funds for floods deprivation, but we don’t.”

Earlier, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in her Budget speech in Lok Sabha said, “Bihar has frequently suffered from floods, many of them originating outside the country. Plans to build flood control structures in Nepal are yet to progress. Our government, through the Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Program and other sources, will provide financial support for projects with an estimated cost of Rs 11,500 crores such as the Kosi-Mechi intra-state link and 20 other ongoing and new schemes including barrages, river pollution abatement, and irrigation projects.” (ANI)

Opposition attacks govt over Bengal train accident

As news of the accident spread, social media platforms quickly became the battleground for political figures to express their outrage and demands for accountability…reports Asian Lite News

The Kanchenjunga Express tragedy in Bengal has reignited opposition fury, fresh from their recent gains in the general election. The accident, involving the Kolkata-bound Kanchanjunga Express, saw three coaches derail near Rangapani station, close to New Jalpaiguri, when a goods train collided with it from behind. The incident resulted in nine fatalities and left 50 others injured. The severity of the situation could have been much worse if not for the placement of the parcel and guard’s coaches at the rear of the train.

As news of the accident spread, social media platforms quickly became the battleground for political figures to express their outrage and demands for accountability. Former railway ministers, including Lalu Yadav and Mamata Banerjee, alongside leaders from the Congress and Sharad Pawar’s NCP, were particularly vocal. They accused the government of gross negligence and demanded immediate responsibility be taken for the tragic incident.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw attempted to address the situation by visiting the accident site in the afternoon. He acknowledged the gravity of the accident and assured that rescue operations were complete and efforts were now focused on restoration. However, he also called for a halt to political discourse, stating, “This is not the time for politics.”

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who served as the railway minister during two different terms under the UPA and NDA governments, criticized the current administration for prioritizing electioneering over railway safety and passenger amenities. She highlighted issues such as dirty bathrooms and poor bedding conditions, reflecting on the broader neglect of railway staff and infrastructure.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Lalu Yadav, who managed the railway portfolio during UPA’s first term, was quick to question the accountability for repeated railway accidents. His post on X (formerly Twitter) questioned who would take responsibility for the continuous accidents plaguing the country’s railways.

Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge spearheaded his party’s attack, accusing the BJP-led government of turning the Railway Ministry into a platform for self-promotion rather than addressing safety concerns. He emphasized that it is the duty of a responsible opposition to highlight the government’s failings, calling today’s tragedy a stark reminder of the alleged mismanagement.

Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for government accountability and improved safety measures. Priyanka Gandhi’s post underscored growing concerns about passenger safety, translating her message from Hindi to point out the consequences of central government negligence over the past decade. Senior Congress leader Deepender Hooda also reiterated these points to the media, criticizing the central government’s handling of railway safety.

Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) drew a comparison with past ministers, highlighting how Nitish Kumar resigned as Union railway minister following the 1999 Gasal train accident, contrasting this with Ashwini Vaishnaw’s tenure, which has seen multiple accidents without similar accountability. The NCP accused the current administration of using the railway ministry for promoting the Modi government rather than ensuring passenger safety.

The official Congress handle also detailed a list of major train accidents over the last decade, pointing to a consistent pattern of negligence and mismanagement. The opposition’s unified stance highlights a significant political pressure on the current government to address the systemic issues within the Indian Railways and take concrete steps towards improving safety and accountability.

West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday announced the release of Rs 2900 crore in financial assistance to 1.05 crore farmers of the state.

She added that the West Bengal government is also releasing Rs 293 crore for 2.10 lakh farmers who suffered crop losses due to adverse weather conditions during the current Rabi season.

“I am happy to announce that (apart from providing Rs. 2,900 cr. assistance to 1 crore 5 lakh farmers and bargadars across the state under the Krishak Bandhu Natun Scheme), we are also releasing today onwards a sum of Rs 293 crore directly to the bank accounts of our 2.10 lakh farmers who suffered crop losses due to adverse weather conditions during current Rabi season. This is done under our unique Bangla Shasya Bima (BSB) which is our unique crop insurance scheme where the State Government pays the entire premium for all crops,” she said in a post on X.

“Since inception in 2019, 3133 crore have reached the bank accounts of the affected one crore farmers! Jai Bangla!,” she said in the post.

“For cultivable land of one acre onwards, a farmer gets Rs 10000, and for lesser quantum of land, proportionate amount with minimum being Rs 4000 per year. Since inception in 2019, a sum of Rs 18,234 crore has thus reached the farmers’ accounts,” she said in another post.

“In addition, for a farmer dying between 18 and 60, his family gets death compensation of Rs 2 lakh. Total 1,12,000 bereaved families in West Bengal have received total Rs 2240 crore in last few years on this account. We are committed to our farmers’ economic betterment and social security,” she added in the post.

    Yogyashree scheme

CM Banerjee asserted that the “Yogyashree” scheme, designed to offer free-of-cost training to SC/ST students of the state for admission in engineering and medical courses would now be extended to boys and girls of Minority, OBC and General categories also.

Taking to X, CM Mamata Banerjee shared, “We are proud that our “Yogyashree” scheme, which we started to provide completely free-of-cost training to SC/ST students of the state for admission in engineering and medical courses, has been yielding increasingly greater and greater benefits for our SC/ST boys & girls. Now we shall also include the boys and girls of Minority, OBC and General categories in this scheme.”

She further said that training would be provided from Class onwards for better preparation.

She further shared, “In 2024 alone these “Yogyashree” trainees got 23 ranks (including 13 IIT seats) in JEE (Advanced), 75 ranks in JEE (Main), 432 ranks in WBJEE, and 110 ranks in NEET. These achievements in these tough competitive examinations are better than even the earlier years’ results. In consideration of the value of this critical training support to our disadvantaged boys and girls, we have increased the number of centres in the State now to 50 and number of our supported trainees to 2000 and the training will be given from Class XI onwards for better preparation.”

She emphasised this scheme would bring out engineers and doctors in large numbers from the weaker section of the society.

“Let our boys and girls from the weaker sections be engineers and doctors in larger numbers. We shall now include students of Minority, OBC, and General categories in this scheme. Kudos to them!,” she further posted. (ANI)

The verbal war came ahead of the seventh phase of the general elections on June 1, when nine seats in state capital Kolkata, South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas are scheduled to go to the polls…reports Asian Lite News

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief minister Mamata Banerjee clashed during the campaign trail in the battleground state of West Bengal on Tuesday as the two leaders addressed multiple rallies and held road shows to canvass voters ahead of the final phase of the general elections this weekend.

Speaking at two rallies in Baruipur and Barasat, Modi accused the Trinamool Congress government of appeasement politics and deceiving young people from other backward classes (OBC), pointing to a recent Calcutta high court ruling that scrapped OBC certificates to 77 groups since 2010. He also held a road show in north Kolkata.

Hours later, Banerjee, who held two foot marches cutting through the heart of Kolkata and addressed a rally, hit back as she reiterated her opposition to the controversial court order and accused Modi of lying to the people of India.

The verbal war came ahead of the seventh phase of the general elections on June 1, when nine seats in state capital Kolkata, South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas are scheduled to go to the polls. This is a crucial phase for both the Bharatiya Janata Party, which performed impressively in other parts of the state but drew a blank here in 2019, and the TMC, which is looking to defend its fortress in south Bengal.

With just four days to go, Modi slammed the TMC for apparently attacking the judiciary over the high court verdict. “I was taken aback. Questions are now being raised on the intention of the judges and the judiciary. I want to ask the TMC whether they would now unleash its goons on the judges. The entire nation is seeing how the TMC is throttling the judiciary,” Modi said at Barasat in North 24 Parganas.

Without naming Banerjee, Modi said the court exposed the “treachery” of the TMC. “The party snatched the rights of OBC youth to support its appeasement politics and vote jihad. The TMC has betrayed the OBCs of West Bengal,” he said.

The Prime Minister also said “he didn’t allow any scam to take place at the Centre”.

“Ten years ago, I gave a guarantee: Na khaunga, na khaane dunga. I didn’t allow a single scam to take place at the Centre in these 10 years. Now Modi is giving another guarantee to the country and to West Bengal in particular. Jisne khaya hai, use bahar nikalunga aur jiska khaya hai usko main lautaunga,” he said in Barasat.

Last week, the Calcutta high court scrapped OBC certificates awarded to 77 communities since 2010, an overwhelming majority of them Muslim, in West Bengal. observing that such reservations were “illegal”.

“Religion indeed appears to have been the sole criterion” for declaring these communities as OBCs, the court said, adding that it “is of the view that the selection of 77 classes of Muslims as backwards is an affront to the Muslim community as a whole”.

The state government has said that it will move the Supreme Court against the verdict.

“It is quite evident that TMC doesn’t like those who expose its treachery and lies. I am astonished to see how the party is questioning the judiciary. Don’t they have any faith in the judiciary and our Constitution?” Modi asked.

    Hours later, Banerjee hit back.

“A few days back 1.5 million OBC certificates were scrapped. I don’t accept this order. I am a lawyer too. I can’t say anything against judges but I can speak against the judgment,” Banerjee said on Tuesday evening in Behala.

“He will be able to call himself Prime Minister for another week or so. After that he will have to use the word former. Today he said he monitored the cyclone from Delhi. It is a blatant lie. Does it suit him? Telling lies is not the PM’s constitutional right,” Banerjee said.

She was referring to the Modi’s statements in Barasat, where the Prime Minister said: “We all faced the cyclone with the blessings of Goddess Kali. The Union government was constantly monitoring it. I was also in constant touch. NDRF and other teams did a good job. The Centre is providing all help to the state.”

In the evening Modi held his first-ever road show in Kolkata. The vibrant cavalcade started from the Shyambazar crossing. He paid tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at a statue at Shyambazar before starting his roadshow.

The roadshow terminated at the ancestral residence of Swami Vivekananda on Simla Street in North Kolkata, with people thronging the route.

Banerjee, meanwhile, walked 9km in her two roadshows. In the first, she walked from Birati Banik More to Airport gate number two on Jessore Road. In the second, Banerjee walked from Entally Market in the northern part of the city to Ballygunge Phari in south Kolkata.

Earlier in the day, the PM mounted an attack on the TMC on multiple fronts, including alleged appeasement politics, corruption, opposition of the Citizenship Amendment Act, recent controversies involving some monks, and allegations of sexual assault on women in Sandeshkhali.

“The Trinamool has started abusing Hindu monks and ascetics. Ramakrishna Mission, ISKCON and Bharat Sevashram Sangha are respected all over the world. But TMC has started abusing them to carry forward its agenda of vote jihad,” he said.

He was referring to Banerjee’s statements on May 18 in which she had accused a section of monks of helping the BJP, prompting a raft of criticism. Banerjee later said that she wasn’t against the organisations.

Later in the day, in Baruipur, Modi asked the people to vote for the BJP.

“Ask 100 people as to which government is coming to power, 90 would tell you that the Modi government is coming. If it is certain that the Modi government is coming so why waste votes? Your votes should be used to strengthen the government at the Centre.”

Didi’s offer to cook food for PM stirs row

The CPI(M) weighed in, hinting at a possible political alliance between the TMC and the BJP, while criticizing both Banerjee and Modi for intertwining politics with religion…reports Asian Lite News

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s unconventional offer to “cook food” for Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ignited a flurry of reactions across the political spectrum. Banerjee’s invitation, delivered with a hint of sarcasm, has been met with a blend of skepticism and support from various quarters.

Banerjee’s gesture came as a response to Prime Minister Modi’s recent remark accusing RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav of consuming fish during a Hindu fasting period. During an election rally, Banerjee took a dig at Modi’s alleged interference in dietary choices and expressed her willingness to prepare a meal for him.

While Banerjee’s supporters laud her culinary skills and defend her stance on individual dietary autonomy, critics, particularly from the BJP, have questioned the underlying motives. Former BJP state president Tathagata Roy mocked Banerjee’s offer, suggesting she first extend it to her lieutenant Firhad Hakim.

“Mamata Banerjee wants to feed Modi ji with fish and rice cooked by her. Good proposal. But before that, why doesn’t she first offer pork chop to her lieutenant Firhad Hakim? It will serve three purposes, secularism will be asserted, it will show charity begins at home and the fritters will also be praised,” Roy posted on X.

The CPI(M) weighed in, hinting at a possible political alliance between the TMC and the BJP, while criticizing both Banerjee and Modi for intertwining politics with religion. However, the TMC stood by Banerjee, emphasizing her defense of India’s religious and cultural diversity.

In the midst of these divergent perspectives, the debate over Banerjee’s offer underscores broader issues of political rhetoric, individual rights, and the delicate balance between religious freedom and political agendas in India.
