Eighty percent of gas stations in Iran were back in service after a major cyberattack caused widespread disruption…reports Asian Lite News

By Wednesday, 3,000 gas stations in the country have been linked to the Iranian distribution network and are filling tanks at the standard price, Xinhua news agency quoted Fatemeh Kahi, the spokesperson for the National Iranian Oil Product Distribution Company (NIOPDC), was saying.

Distribution of half-price rationed gasoline through individual smart cards is being relaunched at a slower pace, and there are currently 220 stations providing that service across Iran, Kahi said.

Due to the dispersion of fuel stations across the country and the need for the presence of a technician in each one of them to solve the problem, the reactivation of the special price distribution “will be time-consuming,” the NIOPDC spokeswoman added.

A major cyberattack occurred on Tuesday and caused long queues at gas stations across the country.

The Supreme Council of Cyberspace Secretary Abolhassan Firouzabadi has said the attack was probably carried out by “a foreign country” with the aim of disrupting Iran’s public services.

According to Iranian news network Press TV, the country has been using an online system to ration subsidised fuel since November 2019, when the government ordered a series of price hikes for gasoline and diesel.

Under the system, motorists are entitled to 60 liters of gasoline per month at a lower price.

The Israeli Ministry of Health has detected an abnormal increase in the number of cyberattack attempts against hospitals…reports Asian Lite News

The Israeli Ministry of Health has detected an abnormal increase in the number of cyberattack attempts against hospitals and medical organisations in the last two days, the Ministry and the Israel National Cyber Directorate (INCD) said in a joint statement.

The Israeli cybersecurity company Check Point Software Technologies later said that an average of 627 cyberattack attempts per hospital or organization was recorded in Israel on Friday and Saturday, 72 per cent higher than previous weekends, reports Xinhua news agency.

Early preparing and rapid response by the ministry’s cyber centre and computer teams in the attacked organisations stopped the attempts and no damage was caused, the joint statement said.

Meanwhile, the Ministry and the directorate continued to work to restore the data systems of the state-owned Hillel Yaffe Medical Centre in the coastal city of Hadera, following a severe cyberattack carried out against the hospital on Wednesday.

The hospital administration, on Saturday, lodged an FIR against unidentified hackers under the IT Act, 2008 at Wazirganj police station…reports Asian Lite News

Cyber criminals have struck again in Lucknow. This time, they have hacked into the computer network of Balrampur Hospital and fraudulently generated dozens of fake birth and death certificates over the past month and issued it to different people.

The hospital administration, on Saturday, lodged an FIR against unidentified hackers under the IT Act, 2008 at Wazirganj police station.

Interestingly, the hospital does not have a gynaecology and obstetrics wing and, hence, not a single birth took place here.

However, the hospital authorities so far have found that at least 41 birth certificates have been issued.

Officers believe that it could be just a tip of the iceberg and are conducting an audit to find out if more fake certificates related to birth or death and any other medical documents were also generated through the hospital system.

Police suspect that this could be a part of an all-India racket which has been hacking into hospital portals across the country and generating fake death and birth certificates online and selling them to people.

Dr M.P. Singh, officer in charge of issuing certificates, said the hospital is connected to the centralised network of portals run by the Civil Registration System (CRS) which works under the chief registrar (birth and death), New Delhi, and keeps the population record of the country.

Dr Singh said, “We have a separate user ID and password. In the past one month, we experienced snags while accessing the system for issuing death certificates. It denied us access every now and then. When we lodged a complaint with the chief registrar office, it told us that there might be some ‘suspicious activities’ being carried out by using the hospital’s user ID and password.”

“On August 16, when the portal denied us access again, we contacted computer experts at the health directorate and got a probe done which revealed that the system has been hacked,” he added.

Later, an internal audit found that as many as 41 fake birth certificates had been generated through the hospital’s user ID in the span of a month despite the fact that the hospital does not take delivery cases.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Manoj Agrawal said, “We have asked other hospitals to report if they are also facing similar problems.”

At present, nine district government hospitals and three government-aided medical educational institutions in the city are connected to the CRS portal and allowed to issue birth or death certificates.

Meanwhile, assistant commissioner of police, Chowk, I.P. Singh said, “A case has been registered and a probe is underway to trace the trail of hacking.”

Open societies are particularly vulnerable to disinformation and cyber-attacks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday.

Addressing an Outreach Session of the G7 Summit virtually, he shared the concern expressed by several leaders and stressed the need to ensure that cyberspace remains an avenue for advancing democratic values and not of subverting it.

On the second day of the Outreach Sessions of the G7 Summit, Prime Minister Modi took part in two sessions titled ‘Building Back Together—Open Societies and Economies’ and ‘Building Back Greener: Climate and Nature’.

Highlighting the non-democratic and unequal nature of global governance institutions, PM Modi called for the reform of the multilateral system as the best signal of commitment to the cause of Open Societies.

The leaders adopted the ‘Open Societies Statement’ at the end of the meeting, the PMO said.

In the session on climate change, the Indian Prime Minister highlighted that the planet’s atmosphere, biodiversity and oceans cannot be protected by countries acting in silos, and called for collective action on climate change.
