Capitol riot review suggests a slew of upgrades

Hiring more Capitol Police officers, improving its intelligence capability are some of the recommendations in the draft report of a top-level review that calls for security improvements to prevent another breach of the Capitol.

The US House members will receive closed-door briefings regarding the review report on Monday. Briefings from the task force led by retired Army Lieutenant General Russel Honore will be given to members of both parties, according to media reports.

The recommendations in the report also include hiring more Capitol Police officers, streamlining the force’s command structure, and upgrading fences and security surveillance.

According to news reports, it even suggests restoring horse-mounted patrols to the Capitol complex that were disbanded in 2005.

Earlier, Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Christopher Wray, had said that the law enforcement agency classifies the deadly January 6 Capitol riot by former President Donald Trump’s supporters as domestic terrorism.

“That attack, that siege, was criminal behavior, plain and simple, and it’s behaviour that we, the FBI, view as domestic terrorism,” Wray said at a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, Xinhua news agency reported.

Wray said the rioters came from “a variety of backgrounds”.

“The attackers on January 6 included a number – and the number keeps growing as we build out our investigations – of what we would call militia violent extremism. And we have had some already arrested who we would put in the category of racially motivated violent extremism, white as well,” said Wray.
