Sunak dials Harry Kane, hails him as ‘all time great’

With Manchester United and Bayern Munich leading the chase to sign him, Kane’s reply to Sunak indicated that he wants to stay in England…reports Asian Lite News

Harry Kane has told Prime Minister Rishi Sunak that he now has his sights set on Alan Shearer’s Premier League goal-scoring record after breaking Wayne Rooney’s England record on Thursday night — in a signal that he wants to stay on in the Premier League rather than move abroad this summer.

Sunak called up Kane for a pep talk on Saturday and to congratulate him on becoming England’s all-time record scorer with 54 goals, his second record of the season after beating Jimmy Greaves’s Tottenham goal-scoring record last month.

And it might be taken as a sign as to where he will be moving in the summer, with the striker widely anticipated to leave Tottenham.

With Manchester United and Bayern Munich leading the chase to sign him, Kane’s reply to Sunak indicated that he wants to stay in England.

The Prime Minister commended Kane for being an ‘amazing role model’ before going on quiz him about his future aims ahead of England’s game with Ukraine on Sunday at 5pm on Channel 4.

‘Given how young you are I know you’ll be very humble about it but Premier League all-time goal-scoring record in your sights right?’ asked Sunak.

‘Yeah it’s definitely there,’ Kane replied. ‘You know, I’m getting closer so it’s for sure something I want to achieve, but I try not to look too far ahead in football. You know, a lot can change in a short period of time, but I’m 29, so hopefully got plenty of years left. So for sure it’d something I’d love to do.’

Shearer’s Premier League record stands at 260 goals — though he also scored 23 goals in the old First Division, so the real record is 283 goals.

Kane is now No 3 on the all-time list on 204 goals, just four behind Rooney. But it will take him at least two seasons to get past Shearer’s Premier League record and maybe four more seasons to beat 283.

United will certainly play on his desire to establish himself as the greatest English striker of all time as part of their pitch to take him to Old Trafford.

Kane has one year left on his contract at Spurs and given the turmoil at the club and fact that realistically he won’t win a trophy there in the near future, he is widely expected to move.

Meanwhile, more than 1,000 displaced Ukrainians and their host families will be guests at Wembley for Sunday night’s Euro 2024 qualifier.

The FA and Wembley have invited hundreds of refugees residing in the UK after fleeing war in their homeland to watch their team’s opening game of the campaign. Around 4,200 Ukraine fans will be at a sold-out Wembley this evening.
