Harris alters race, Trump’s confidence shaken

In key swing states, where the Electoral College contest is decided, Harris and Trump are now evenly matched…reports Asian Lite News

A new poll released Sunday shows Kamala Harris, who is about to announce her vice presidential pick, has now tied with Donald Trump, altering a White House race that Trump had seemed poised to win. With the November 5 election approaching, Harris has erased Trump’s earlier lead, gaining a slight one-point advantage over him nationwide, compared to Trump’s previous five-point edge over Biden.

In key swing states, where the Electoral College contest is decided, Harris and Trump are now evenly matched. This is notable for Harris, who entered the race just last month after President Joe Biden withdrew his reelection bid due to concerns over his age and fitness for a second term.

Harris, Biden’s vice president and the first Black and South Asian woman in that role, is in a crucial phase to define her candidacy before Trump does. Her upcoming choice for a running mate is expected to be a significant decision that will shape her campaign’s direction.

The CBS News/YouGov poll also highlights that Trump still leads on economic issues, with 45% of voters expecting to be better off financially if he wins, compared to 25% for Harris. However, Harris is preferred over Trump in terms of temperament, with Trump facing scrutiny over his cognitive health, an issue that now concerns voters more about him than about Harris.

Despite Trump’s political high last month, following an assassination attempt and a Republican convention that showcased his vigour, he now faces challenges with Biden’s exit and Harris’s rapid rise.

Trump has been attacking Harris, calling her names and making controversial remarks, while Harris’s campaign has been focusing on portraying Trump and his vice presidential pick, J.D. Vance, as out of touch. Harris’s team has also criticised Trump for declining a scheduled debate on ABC, suggesting he is reluctant to face her on the more supportive Fox News.
