Indian Navy’s P-8I Soars into Guam for Exercise ‘Sea Dragon 24’

The core focus of Exercise Sea Dragon 24 is to strengthen coordination among the allied navies….reports Asian Lite News

The Indian Navy’s advanced P-8I aircraft marked its arrival in Guam, USA, earlier this week to participate in the prestigious Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) exercise, Sea Dragon 24. Scheduled from January 10 to 22, Sea Dragon 24 is the fourth edition of the exercise conducted by the US Navy.

Exercise Sea Dragon 24, a cornerstone event in maritime defence, aims to foster enhanced cooperation and seamless interoperability among naval forces from the United States, Australia, South Korea, Japan, and India.

The Indian Navy spokesperson conveyed the significance of this event on social media, stating, “#IndianNavy’s #P8I landed at Guam, #08Jan 24, to participate in Ex #SeaDragon_24. The exercise aims to enhance synergy & #Interoperability amongst participating navies…through professional interactions on ground & in air.”

The core focus of Exercise Sea Dragon 24 is to strengthen coordination among the allied navies. This exercise serves as a dynamic platform for testing the prowess of diverse aircraft in detecting and tracking simulated as well as live underwater targets, facilitating an exchange of tactical knowledge and expertise.

The exercise lineup includes an impressive array of aircraft: the Indian Navy’s P8I, the US Navy’s P8A, Japan Maritime Self Defence Force’s P1, Royal Canadian Air Force’s CP-140, and Republic of Korea’s P3C.

This strategic engagement is part of India’s ongoing commitment to multilateral maritime exercises. Notably, in March of the previous year, the Indian Navy participated in the France-hosted La Perouse exercise, which witnessed engagement from seven nations. This exercise embodied the vital role of fortifying maritime security connections and advancing joint capabilities among the allied navies.

The P-8I aircraft, in particular, has been instrumental in India’s maritime surveillance and anti-submarine operations, besides playing a crucial role in scenarios like the Doklam crisis near the Sikkim-Bhutan border. Reflecting the strategic importance of these aircraft, in September 2023, the Indian Navy announced its intention to enhance its fleet with six additional P-8I aircraft from the United States.

Through its participation in Exercise Sea Dragon 24, the Indian Navy continues to affirm its role in promoting a secure and stable Indo-Pacific region, in concerted collaboration with its global partners. (India News Network)
