Yemen Peace Plan Hinges on Commitments, Says UN Envoy

US envoy urged adherence to international maritime law by the Houthis and emphasized peaceful resolutions…reports Asian Lite News

The UN’s Yemen envoy, Hans Grundberg, has outlined a peace roadmap for the country, emphasizing the necessity of strong commitments from both the internationally recognized government and Iran-backed Houthis.

Grundberg, in an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, stressed the phased implementation of any peace plan, contingent on a sustainable ceasefire and the withdrawal of non-Yemeni forces, including the Arab Coalition, Iran’s Quds Force, and Hezbollah.

The withdrawal, linked to completing the first phase, may span six months. Grundberg highlighted rebuilding trust among warring parties, aiming for a political dialogue leading to conflict resolution, accountable governance, and economic development.

He urged adherence to international maritime law by the Houthis and emphasized peaceful resolutions for unrest in the south, while advocating for youth and female participation in Yemen’s post-war political process.
