Australian PM Anthony Albanese marries long-time partner Jodie Haydon in Canberra, becoming the first sitting PM to wed, celebrating love amid a historic political year.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese tied the knot with his long-time partner, Jodie Haydon, in a private ceremony at The Lodge in Canberra on Saturday, becoming the first Australian leader to marry while in office.
In a joint statement, the couple said they were “absolutely delighted to share our love and commitment to spending our future lives together, in front of our family and closest friends.” Albanese also shared a brief video of the celebration on X with the single-word caption: “Married.”
The intimate ceremony was attended by senior ministers including Penny Wong, Mark Butler, Katy Gallagher, Don Farrell, Tony Burke, Richard Marles, Jim Chalmers, Tim Ayres, and Jenny McAllister, alongside New South Wales MPs John Graham and Jo Haylen. Australian Opposition Leader Sussan Ley also extended her congratulations, wishing the couple “every happiness as they continue building their lives together.”
The wedding marks a historic year for Albanese, who led the Labour Party to a landslide election victory just months ago, securing a record 94 seats in the lower house. Haydon has been a constant presence at Albanese’s public engagements over the years, including his 2022 election campaign and the recent election celebrations in May.
Reflecting on their journey, Albanese expressed gratitude to Haydon, saying, “I am so grateful for your support, your friendship, and your love. You make me so happy, which matters. You have my heart, I love you, and I look forward to living our lives together.”
This is Albanese’s second marriage. His previous 19-year marriage to former NSW politician Carmel Tebbutt ended in 2019.
